Trump's archenemy, Republican Representative Liz Cheney, loses her party's re-election nomination
JACKSON, Mississippi (United States), (AFP) - Republican Liz Cheney , Donald Trump 's archenemy, suffered a crushing defeat in the race for her party's nomination for re-election as a representative from her home state of Wyoming, as Harriet Hegemon, who is backed by the former president, won this nomination.
Cheney, 56, has become one of Trump's staunchest enemies since she joined a parliamentary committee investigating the former president's role in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 by a mob of his supporters.
In a speech acknowledging her defeat to Hegemen, the daughter of former US Vice President Dick Cheney pledged to "do whatever it takes" so that Trump would not be elected president again.
"I've said since January 6th that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump never approaches the Oval Office again, and I mean it," she added.
The Republican billionaire was quick to welcome his enemy's defeat.
Trump wrote on TruthSocial, the social network he founded, that Cheney "should be ashamed of herself, of the way she acts."
"Now, she can finally fall into political oblivion," the former president added.
And in a very conservative state where more than 70% of its voters voted for Trump in the last presidential election, Harriet Hegemann endorses the theory held by Trump supporters that the 2020 election was “stolen” from the former president, despite countless evidence proving the allegations untrue.
As for Cheney, who was rumored to be planning to run for the upcoming presidential elections, she confirmed on Tuesday evening that her hand is extended to "Republicans, Democrats and independents."
"Let us pledge to build a united front against all those who want to destroy our republic," she said.
