Hungary again obstructs the imposition of EU sanctions on Russia

Brussels - (dpa) - Diplomats told the German News Agency (dpa) this evening, Wednesday, that Hungary has demanded the introduction of other amendments to the new package of sanctions that the European Union intends to impose on Russia, as it demanded that the name of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church be deleted. Patriarch Kirill from the list of sanctions.

Hungary presented this objection during negotiations in Brussels today, Wednesday, to complete the sanctions, after the leaders of the European Union countries reached a political agreement on the package the day before yesterday, Monday, at a special summit. The European Commission proposed to include Russia's top religious official in the sanctions package, but EU leaders did not discuss this matter at their summit.

Kirill, a staunch supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, endorsed Putin's invasion of Ukraine in his sermons and blames NATO and the West for the war Putin ordered.

This is the latest hurdle placed by Hungary after it pressed hard against a European embargo on Russian oil, before it succeeded in securing comprehensive exemptions in order to obtain its oil imports through pipelines.
