In their closing summit statement... the G20 countries in Indonesia overwhelmingly condemn the war in Ukraine
Bali - (AFP) - The majority of the G20 countries meeting in Indonesia "firmly condemned the war in Ukraine," according to the final statement issued by the summit on Wednesday, which considered that this conflict "undermines the global economy." The twenty largest global economies, including Russia, also agreed in the joint statement that "the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is not permitted."
The G20 said in the closing statement of its summit held on the island of Bali, Indonesia, on Wednesday, that the "majority" of its member states "firmly condemns the war in Ukraine," considering that this conflict "undermines the global economy."
The twenty largest economies in the world, including Russia, also confirmed in the joint statement that "the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is not permitted."
Following a series of preparatory ministerial meetings for the G20 summit, which failed to reach consensus due to the deep divisions between Westerners, Russia and the countries of the south over the war in Ukraine, host country Indonesia intensified diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement during the summit.
In the context, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said: "Today we succeeded in adopting and ratifying the G20 Leaders' Declaration," noting that it is the first agreement on a joint text reached by the group since February. Adding: "I express my gratitude to all those who participated and showed flexibility" to reach this joint text.
Regarding the specific aspects of the war, the text mentioned the divergent positions of the states which made it possible to obtain the signature of Russia.
Indonesia, which hosted the G20 summit, had hoped in early 2022 to focus in its presidency on concerted efforts to recover the global economy from the Corona virus pandemic. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine caused turmoil and led to several crises, especially in food and energy, and to widening divisions between countries.
