Leader of a settlement movement enters Gaza without the army's knowledge to re-settle

The Israeli military is investigating the entry of Daniella Weiss, the head of an extremist settler movement, into the Gaza Strip last week, contrary to protocol and without the knowledge of military leaders.

Israeli soldiers in Gaza overrode their superiors to help the leader of the Nahala settlement movement enter the Strip to survey the sites of the settlements she seeks to establish, Israeli media reported.

Israeli public radio reported that Daniela Weiss, who seeks to resettle north of Gaza, toured the Israeli side of the border fence with the Strip with others on November 13, and then "the group then crossed the border and traveled some distance inside the Strip."

She added that Weiss "contacted soldiers she knew near the Netzarim corridor in central Gaza, who in turn sent a car to transport her and her colleagues deep into the Strip."

The Netzarim corridor is a buffer zone in central Gaza, established by the Israeli military on the site of a settlement that was dismantled in the 2005 disengagement plan from the Strip. “After that, the settlers were transferred back to the Gaza border and exited through an unofficial gate to avoid being stopped by security forces.”

According to the source, senior Israeli military officials were not aware of Weiss's entry into the Strip.

The army stated that "Weiss' entry into the Gaza Strip is unknown and was not approved in the appropriate ways, and if the incident occurred, it is illegal and contrary to protocol and will be dealt with accordingly."

"Potential settlers are ready to resettle in Gaza at any moment," Weiss told Israeli public radio.

Last October, Weiss said during a press conference that the Nahala movement had established 6 settlement groups comprising 700 families, ready to establish new settlements in Gaza if the opportunity arose.

She explained to the participants: “We came here (the conference site) to settle the entire Gaza Strip from north to south, not just part of it.”

To this end, Weiss expressed support for the expulsion of Gaza's population, which numbers about two million people.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denies Israel intends to resettle the Strip, but his coalition partners and members of his Likud party have talked about the idea.
