Blinken calls for more normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel
In a lengthy article in the magazine "Foreign Affairs", which specializes in American political affairs, US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, outlines the features of the American strategy for now and for the future, addressing all issues that concern the United States, from confronting Russia, China, North Korea and Iran, and the prospects of the multiple and mobile American wars, and mentioning among other things, the "Middle East" and the Israeli war on Gaza and Lebanon, and the American role in this panorama, placing the blame for all the international "negatives" on "this alignment axis", and reserving the civilizational positives exclusively for the United States and its allies.
“This global alignment is most intensely evident in the Middle East,” he says. “In the past, Russia supported the UN Security Council’s efforts to constrain Iran’s nuclear ambitions; now it is enabling Iran’s nuclear program and facilitating its destabilizing activities. Russia has also moved from being a close partner of Israel to strengthening its ties with Hamas after the October 7 attack.”
“For its part, the Biden administration has been working tirelessly with partners in the Middle East and beyond to end the conflict and suffering in Gaza, find a diplomatic solution that enables Israelis and Lebanese to live in safety on both sides of the border, manage the risks of a wider regional war, and work toward greater integration and normalization in the region, including between Israel and Saudi Arabia,” he added.
“These efforts are interconnected,” Blinken stressed. “Without an end to the war in Gaza and a time-bound, credible path to statehood that addresses legitimate Palestinian aspirations and Israeli security needs, normalization cannot advance. But if these efforts succeed, normalization would tether Israel to a regional security architecture, open up economic opportunities across the region, and isolate Iran and its proxies.”
“In the Secretary of State’s view, ‘signs of this integration have been evident in the coalition of nations, including Arab states, that helped Israel defend itself against an unprecedented direct attack by Iran last April. My visits to the region since October 7 have confirmed that there is a path to greater peace and integration – if leaders there are willing to make the tough decisions.’”
“Despite our continued efforts, the humanitarian consequences of the war in Gaza remain devastating,” Blinken said. “Tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians have been killed in a conflict they did not start and cannot stop. Gaza’s population has been almost entirely displaced, and the vast majority are malnourished. Nearly 100 hostages remain in Gaza, either killed or held in brutal conditions by Hamas. All of this suffering adds urgency to our efforts to end the conflict, prevent its recurrence, and lay the foundation for lasting peace and security in the region.”
