Guterres: It was not UNRWA, but Israel that supported Hamas in order to fragment the Palestinian leadership
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly rejected Israeli allegations that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) provided support to Hamas.
Guterres said in an interview with CNN: "Of course, there are tunnels under UNRWA buildings and there are tunnels everywhere in Gaza, but there was no commitment on the part of UNRWA in general to provide any kind of support to Hamas. This is very clear."
He added: "If Hamas did receive some support at crucial moments, it was not from UNRWA, it was from Israel. And as everyone knows, the government of Israel in the past was interested in developing Hamas in order to fragment the Palestinian leadership."
UNRWA was subjected to an Israeli attack and systematic distortion against the backdrop of allegations against 12 employees working for the agency, which prompted 18 countries and the European Union to suspend their funding to it. However, some of those parties and countries reversed their decisions and released funding to the agency following UN investigations that proved the allegations were false.
