Occupation pressures to drop South Africa's lawsuit

The American website "Axios" reported that the Israeli Foreign Ministry sent a secret cable to the Israeli embassy in Washington, and to all consulates in the United States, regarding the South African case before the International Court of Justice.

The website said that the cable called on the embassy and consulates to work immediately with federal lawmakers, governors and Jewish organizations to pressure South Africa to change its policies toward Israel, and "make clear that continuing their current actions, such as supporting Hamas and pushing anti-Israel moves in international courts, will come at a high cost."

Axios quoted the cable as saying that Israel is putting pressure on members of the US Congress to pressure South Africa to drop its legal proceedings in the International Court of Justice regarding the war on Gaza.

Israeli diplomats were also instructed to ask members of Congress and Jewish organizations in the United States to communicate directly with South African diplomats in the United States and make clear that South Africa would pay a heavy price if it did not change its policy.

Israeli diplomats were instructed to push for legislation against South Africa at both state and federal levels, “even if it does not materialize, it will be important to introduce it and talk about it,” in an attempt to influence South African policy.

In response to the case filed by South Africa on December 29, the International Court of Justice ordered Tel Aviv on January 26 to take measures to prevent acts of genocide against the Palestinians and to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, which Israel has been besieging for 17 years and waging a devastating war on, leaving tens of thousands dead and wounded.

On May 24, the International Court of Justice, in response to an urgent request submitted by South Africa, issued a decision obliging Israel to stop its military operations in Rafah and open all land crossings into the Strip, especially the Rafah crossing. It also stated that the conditions were met to take new emergency measures in the case of accusing Israel of genocide, but Tel Aviv rejected all the court’s decisions.
