Friedman calls on the United States to support and finance Israel's annexation of the West Bank
Former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman called on the United States to fund Israel's annexation of the West Bank in a book released Tuesday titled "One Jewish State: The Last and Best Hope for Resolving the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict."
Friedman, who was ambassador from 2017 to 2021, wrote in the book that Israel needs financial assistance “to assert and maintain its sovereignty over Judea and Samaria,” using the biblical name for the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
He suggested that the next Republican administration could work with Congress to redirect $1 billion in aid to the Palestinians. “The easiest and most readily available fund to finance annexation (of the West Bank) and to leverage and reposition is the U.S. fund (of funds allocated to the Palestinians),” he wrote.
Friedman said the United States should support Israel’s annexation of the West Bank “based primarily on biblical prophecy and values.” He told the Forward that he hopes to share his annexation plan with former President Trump at “the appropriate time.”
While Friedman was ambassador, Trump unveiled the so-called "deal of the century" that would allow Israel to annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank and the Jordan Valley, the long, narrow area along the West Bank's border with Jordan, a proposal that the Palestinians rejected.
Miriam Adelson, the Israeli-born wife of the late billionaire Sheldon Adelson, has reportedly pledged to spend $100 million on Trump's 2024 campaign to achieve this goal, and is expected to press Trump to support Israel's annexation of the West Bank.
Friedman's book comes out a week after Israel launched its largest offensive in the West Bank since 2002. Israeli officials say the operation will escalate and that the area is being treated as the second most important front, just after Gaza.
