Gaza deal collapses
US and Israeli officials confirmed on Wednesday that the deal to release the hostages and ceasefire is on the verge of collapse.
Officials told Politico that there is no clear, immediate alternative plan that could be put forward instead.
The current proposal, drafted by the United States, Israel, Egypt and Qatar over several weeks in July, is the “strongest form” of a potential deal drafted so far, because it includes terms tailored to the demands of both Hamas and Israel, sources said.
American officials are concerned that this offer will falter, as it has before, and see no clear way to end the war or return the hostages.
For its part, the Hebrew radio Kan reported that the mediators warned the United States that there was a slim chance that Hamas would agree to the proposal it had submitted.
Sources in the negotiating team were quoted as saying: Netanyahu is still putting obstacles in the way of reaching a deal.. As of last night, there were several people in Doha in a desperate attempt to save the chances of the deal’s success.. These concrete negotiations are entirely up to Netanyahu and under his management and responsibility for them falls on his shoulders.. Netanyahu insists on not withdrawing from the Philadelphi corridor.
Netanyahu's office responded by saying: "More fake news from those who repeat Hamas's false propaganda and who, unlike the prime minister, rejected the American mediation offer and refuse to even come to the negotiations (referring to Nitzan Alon)."
