Türkiye Joins Genocide Case Against Israel at ICJ
Turkey on Wednesday filed a request with the International Court of Justice to join the genocide case against Israel.
Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Kecakli said the Turkish request was prepared in a very comprehensive and detailed manner, and was based on Article 63 of the ICJ Statute.
By joining the case, in accordance with Article 63 of the Court's Statute, it is possible to make a general statement on how the Genocide Convention that is the subject of the dispute is to be interpreted, in addition to the concrete event relating to the basis of the dispute.
“No country in the world is above international law, and the case at the International Court of Justice is crucial in ensuring that crimes committed by Israel do not go unpunished,” said Ketchili.
Keçali added that the provisional precautionary measures issued by the International Court of Justice must be implemented as soon as possible. He called on the UN Security Council to do what is incumbent upon it, stressing that Turkey will continue to support the just cause of the Palestinians.
Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Spain and the Palestinian Authority have already applied to join South Africa in the lawsuit against Israel. Belgium, Egypt, the Maldives, Chile and Northern Ireland have also announced their intention to join the lawsuit.
South Africa filed the case with the International Court of Justice on December 29, and as a result, the court decided on a set of precautionary measures that Israel must take.
Last May, South Africa submitted a request to the International Court of Justice to stop the war on Gaza, following the Israeli occupation’s launch of a ground invasion of Rafah.
Subsequently, the International Court of Justice decided that Israel must immediately cease its military offensive or any other actions in Rafah, take effective measures to ensure the access of any committee to investigate the charge of genocide, and that Israel must submit a report within a month explaining all the measures that have been taken.
Since then, the Court of Justice has not held any hearing in the genocide case to date.
