Britain warns Jewish 'Habad' movement after it collects money for Israeli soldier
Britain issued a warning on Saturday to the extremist Jewish movement "Chabad" over its collection of funds for an Israeli soldier in British cities.
The Hebrew newspaper Haaretz reported that the British government "sent a warning to the Israeli settlement group Habed after the government committee overseeing charitable organizations in the United Kingdom confirmed that the group collected money for an Israeli soldier."
The newspaper explained that the extremist settlement movement "Habad" "collected money for an Israeli soldier who fought during the war on Gaza and Lebanon."
The UK government's Charity Commission said it was "not legal or acceptable for a charity to raise money for a soldier in a foreign army".
The newspaper pointed out that the extremist movement "began in October 2023 to collect funds from its branch in London, and more than 180 complaints were submitted about this activity to the British committee."
According to the newspaper, "the movement collected about 2,289 pounds sterling ($2,794), part of which was transferred directly to the Israeli soldier (whom it did not name), while it purchased combat equipment for him with the remaining amount."
The Chabad movement is considered one of the largest Hasidic movements known around the world, and the largest and oldest Jewish organization. It was founded by Rabbi Shneur Zalman Mladi in 1788 in Belarus, then moved to Latvia, then to Poland, and then to Brooklyn, New York, in 1940, where its headquarters are located.
"Habed" is a Hebrew acronym for the three intellectual faculties "wisdom, understanding, knowledge." It is an extremist Jewish movement or group that claims to care for the spiritual and material needs of all Jews around the world and works to strengthen their connection to Jewish rituals and faith, according to its website.
On December 16, 25 MPs from different parties in Britain raised a banner reading “Stop arming Israel” during a protest in front of Parliament in the capital, London.
