Polls show Harris and Trump neck and neck

A Wall Street Journal poll shows the presidential race between Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump is largely tied, after President Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy for the November 5 election.

The poll showed Trump leading Harris (49-47) and that Harris has increasing support among non-white voters. Another Fox News poll showed Harris leading by 6 points in Minnesota, while Trump leads by 1 point in Wisconsin, and they are tied in Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Trump had a 6-point lead over Biden earlier this month before he dropped her out of the race and endorsed his running mate, with black, Latino and young voters showing greater support for Harris than they did for Biden in a previous poll following his debate with Trump late last month.

The poll found that greater support among non-white voters could help Harris in ethnically and culturally diverse states such as Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and North Carolina.

Last Tuesday, Harris narrowly led Trump in a national poll, the first of its kind since President Biden withdrew from the race.

Harris beat Trump by two points, 44% to 42%, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted over the two days after Biden announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the race and endorsing Harris.

In a poll conducted the previous week, Harris, 59, tied with Trump, who is now the oldest candidate in the presidential race at 78, at 44 percent.

Harris, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, trailed the Republican nominee by a narrow margin in another poll also released Tuesday.

Harris has previously said she is willing to debate Trump, who has said he will not allow Harris to be elected, while a New York Times poll showed Harris beginning to narrow the gap between herself and Trump.

Refuse to debate

For its part, the Republican candidate's campaign said it was inappropriate to hold a presidential debate with the presumptive Democratic nominee Harris before she was officially nominated.

In a statement, the campaign expressed its reservations about holding the debate, despite Trump expressing his readiness to debate Harris, and his confirmation that defeating her would be easier than defeating Biden.

Yesterday, former President Barack Obama announced his support for Harris to be the Democratic presidential candidate, in a move that strengthens her campaign to confront Trump in the upcoming elections.

Harris has already confirmed that she has received the support of a sufficient number of delegates to nominate her, and the Democratic Party Rules Committee agreed to hold a remote vote on August 1 to complete the nomination process, instead of waiting until the party's national convention on August 19.
