Poll: Netanyahu's camp and the opposition are unable to form a new government

The results of a recent Israeli public opinion poll showed that the opposition and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's camp lack enough seats to form a new government if elections were held today.

The poll conducted by the Lazar Institute (private) and the results of which were reported by the Israeli newspaper Maariv on Friday morning, without indicating the number of participants, indicated that the opposition camp will obtain 57 seats in the Israeli Knesset (parliament), out of 120.

Netanyahu's camp would win 53 seats, while the Arab parties would win 10 seats, if elections were held today.

At least 61 MPs are required to form a government.

According to the results of the same poll, if elections were held today, the Likud party led by Netanyahu would win 23 seats, while the National Camp party led by former war minister Benny Gantz would win 23 seats.

This is the first time since the beginning of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip on October 7 that the Likud and the National Camp are tied in the number of seats, while the latter has always been ahead in previous polls.

The poll also showed an increase in the popularity of the right-wing opposition party "Israel Our Home" headed by Avigdor Lieberman, which obtains 14 seats, compared to a decline in the popularity of the "There is a Future" party headed by opposition leader Yair Lapid, which obtains 12 seats.

For comparison, Likud currently has 32 seats in the Knesset, Yesh Atid has 24, the National Camp has 12, and Yisrael Beiteinu has 6.

As a result of Netanyahu's refusal, there are no elections on the horizon in Israel, amid an escalation in the Israeli street demanding the resignation of the government, an end to the war on Gaza, and the conclusion of a prisoner exchange deal.

The last elections were held at the end of 2022, and as a result the current government was formed headed by Netanyahu, which remains by law for a period of 4 years, unless the Knesset is dissolved or the government is withdrawn from confidence.
