The fierce Palestinian resistance in Gaza exacerbated the crisis of the American empire and its allies
The bullet that missed Donald Trump's skull last Saturday, while he was giving a speech at an election festival, will add more fuel to an internal situation in which the diseases of the empire are now devastating. Instead of his absence from the political scene, it has become almost certain that he will return as president of America, bringing with him his racist populist programs and policies with internal and external influence, which will deepen these diseases and symptoms of decline.
This is what the majority of analysts and observers agree on. Ironically, this populist, who systematically incited violence against his opponents and against minorities and immigrants, and practiced violence and bullying, is now exposed to the repercussions of this violence.
But what was remarkable, and what he expressed during his presidency, was his willingness to expose dangerous aspects of the American empire, specifically its endless expansionist and bloody wars, and criticized the futility of these wars. What is new about this criticism is that it came from a right-wing figure. Of course, his criticism is not due to his concern or sensitivity towards human rights, dignity, and the rights of peoples, or to the principles of democracy and justice, but rather to purely economic calculations, as he is a businessman and merchant, and morals have no weight in his considerations.
This criticism of the wars of the American empire, due to their barbaric imperialist approach, usually came specifically from the radical left, even though the ideological starting points of the right and left are on opposite sides. Analysts attribute the rise and growth of the populist right and the populist left at the expense of the center-left and the center-right, which have been dragged into the swamp of the neoliberal system led by American imperialism. They attribute it to the crisis of this brutal capitalist system, whose crises are deepening rapidly.
Western analysts from different intellectual backgrounds have been writing for many years that Western liberal democracy has become threatened as big companies gain control over government institutions and politicians. Theses have appeared in the past two decades, such as “the death of democracy,” “the death of politics,” and other dystopian theories.
Former Italian diplomat and intellectual Marco Carnelos believes that the West's false image of reality is collapsing. In his most recent article for the Middle East Eye website, dated July 11, he wrote, “For many years Western democracies built their own Potemkin village, to support policies and narratives divorced from reality. Today they frame everything as an epic struggle between democracy and theocracy. But their Potemkin village is collapsing.” Gradually, the signs are clear.”
The story of Potemkin village is based on describing false villages that were built only to impress. According to the story, which dates back to the late 18th century, Russian military leader Grigory Potemkin, a former lover of Queen Catherine II, created false settlements or villages in the Crimean region on both sides of the Dnieper River during her trip there. The story adds that Potemkin was ordering the village's models to be dismantled and reassembled in another location, in continuous keeping with the Empress's journey. With the passage of time, the story turned into a global literary and political example, so that the building of the Potemkin village began to refer to any building that has one purpose, which is to dazzle by putting up a deceptive façade for the country to falsify reality and make citizens believe that the country is fine.
Carnelos says that the Democratic Party portrayed Trump as unsuitable for the presidency, while they concealed the mental lapses of their candidate, Joe Biden, which had been the subject of discussion over the past years inside and outside the party. This is supported by a reference to what the Wall Street Journal wrote: “They have been deceiving and misleading us for years, all in the name of democracy. The Democrats believed that they could move forward with the process of covering up Biden’s deficit, without being exposed. In doing so, they revealed their contempt for their voters, And for democracy itself.”
He himself adds, “A rational, non-foolish person can ask the question: Who is responsible for this? The definitive answer is a handful of donors and bureaucrats in Washington. This is not a liberal democracy, but a hypocritical oligarchy. They will not be able to continue claiming that they are seeking to save democracy from the danger of Donald Trump.” Because they themselves are practicing the farce of democracy.”
This diplomat believes that this deception and deception is not limited to the United States, but extends to Europe, pointing to what happened in the recent elections, and the position on the crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip, as well as on the disastrous Russian-Ukrainian war, in which the lie of the impact of economic sanctions is being promoted. On Russia, whose per capita income rose, according to a World Bank report, despite the war.
In an article that appeared a few days ago on the independent “Truth Dig” website, under the title “It’s Big Money,” the writer cites what the US President said on the air about businessmen controlling the Democratic Party and putting pressure on it to withdraw from the race. Biden had said, "I am very frustrated with the elite, the party elite, and I don't care what the billionaires think."
The author of the article, Robert Reich, comments, “This is the first time that an American president has acknowledged that the elites of the Democratic Party are the millionaires and billionaires who finance the party and its electoral propaganda.” He adds, "All of this confirms what I have said for many years, that the real political power in the United States, regardless of which of the two major parties, lies in big money."
Returning to the Italian diplomat, in his article he reflects a climate of criticism of the empire that is expanding inside and outside the United States, and he says that the false facade is cracking and lies are being exposed every day. He also believes that, accordingly, “the Israeli village of Potemkin began to collapse, and even the Western public began to realize that the claim that Israel has the right to defend itself is nothing but a license to continue carrying out horrific revenge crimes.”
The question remains about how Trump will impact the results of the Zionist war of annihilation if he wins the presidency, which is almost certain, if no emergency or dramatic development occurs. No one can predict this, because Trump does not want wars in the world, but Israel remains an exception, because it has turned into a religion for both parties.
But there are those who believe that it is unlikely that Trump will be able to influence the outcome of the war, or change the fate of Israel. Israel is unable to win the war, according to its declared military and strategic goals, nor is it able to change the rules of engagement with the Lebanese resistance. There is also internal division and polarization that is intensifying with no horizon to emerge from. Neither Biden nor Trump will be able to help bridge the deep internal gaps.
Some say that this absolute American military and political support for Israel may be a contributing factor to the collapse of the empire. American university professor and activist, Nina Varnia, believes that the fierce Palestinian resistance in Gaza has exacerbated the crisis of the American empire and its allies.
However, it is not correct to reduce the crisis to the person of Trump, but rather primarily to his electoral base with dangerous tendencies, especially the segment of Zionist Christians, whose expansion does not stop with the disappearance of Trump or any other leader, in addition to the non-social and inhumane structure of the expansionist neoliberal system.
