The Guardian: Gaza has turned into a moral and foreign political failure that is more confusing for Biden

A report published by the British newspaper "The Guardian" says that US President Joe Biden failed politically and morally in his handling of Israel's war in Gaza, and showed puzzling weakness in the face of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The report prepared by the Lebanese-American writer Mohamed Bazzi - director of the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at New York University - stated that Biden has shown, since the attack by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Israel in October, almost absolute support for Israel and its leaders, represented by providing... Aviv with weapons, blocking UN resolutions against it, and attempting to undermine the legitimacy of both the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court due to their criticism of Israeli actions.

Biden's inability

However, Bazzi says, Biden did not receive any gratitude from Netanyahu, who has shown constant challenge to Israel's most important ally, and has not paid any price for it. Rather, he has begun to openly mock Biden and his administration, and is trying to destroy Biden's ability to use American weapons as a means of pressure on Israel. The Israeli Prime Minister and his allies are also trying to weaken Biden and prefer Donald Trump to be president again.

He added that Netanyahu has been ignoring massive US arms shipments to Israel since October, and is successfully using the postponement of the only arms shipment to undermine Biden and question his commitment to Israel.

He continued to say: “Because Biden quickly retreated after suspending one package of bombs in May, it is clear that Netanyahu proved successful in confronting Biden.”

The most effective influence

The writer indicated that Biden failed to use the most effective influence he has over the Israeli government, which includes stopping US arms shipments and forcing Netanyahu to accept the ceasefire agreement that Washington has been trying to mediate for months.

He stressed that Gaza has become an embodiment of Biden's moral and political failure, and his administration no longer threatens to delay or cancel other arms shipments to force Israel to change its tactics. Instead, Washington is trying hard to defend itself against Netanyahu's calculated claims that the United States is not supplying Israel with enough weapons.

Concerned about Netanyahu's speech

He said that Biden and his aides are currently concerned that Netanyahu will use his planned speech before a joint session of Congress on July 24 to attack the president again, which is in the interest of Republicans in the House of Representatives who invited Netanyahu to speak despite the administration’s objections. Democratic leaders in Congress initially resisted, but then backed down and joined the Republican-led call.

Bazzi wondered about the reasons for Biden's weak response and his inability to confront Netanyahu, and why he was risking his political future by continuing to support a foreign leader working to destabilize him, and described this as puzzling.

The writer concluded his report by saying that Biden and his administration have become contradictory. They are demanding that Netanyahu and his government stop a brutal war, but they continue to provide weapons and political cover that enable Israel to prolong the bloodshed.
