Israel continues to close the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings for more than a month

The Israeli occupation forces continue to close the Kerem Shalom commercial and Rafah border crossings for the 34th day in a row.

On May 5, 2024, the occupation forces completely closed the Kerem Shalom crossing, southeast of the city of Rafah, and prevented the entry of humanitarian and medical aid. After 20 days of closure, the crossing was opened for less than 24 hours, during which 200 aid trucks entered, which were very scarce quantities. Compared to the needs of the sector, especially after seven continuous months of aggression.

On May 6, the occupation forces announced the start of a ground military operation in Rafah, and the next day, they occupied the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, and prevented the entry of life-saving aid and supplies into the besieged Strip, which exacerbated the humanitarian catastrophe.

According to medical sources, no sick or wounded person has been able to leave the Gaza Strip since the reoccupation of the Palestinian side of the crossing.

The continued closure of the crossings threatens the return of famine to Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip, after citizens exhausted their remaining food supplies in light of the scarcity of aid.

The United Nations said that the amount of aid entering the Gaza Strip has decreased by 67 percent since Israel closed the Rafah crossing.

The United Nations World Food Program said that 9 out of 10 children in the Gaza Strip suffer from acute food poverty.

The program explained in a series of publications on the “X” platform that “the hostilities and restrictions imposed on aid have led to the collapse of food and health systems.”

It pointed out that Palestinian families displaced from Rafah are now in areas suffering from a lack of clean water, medical supplies, and fuel, and are living with limited food aid.

The World Food Program stressed that in order to reach the largest number of people with fewer resources, it was forced to reduce rations and give priority to hot meals produced in local community kitchens.

Yesterday, the occupation forces committed a massacre in the Nuseirat camp, resulting in the death of 210 citizens and the injury of more than 400 others.

The Israeli occupation forces have continued their aggression against Gaza by land, sea and air since October 7, 2023, resulting in the death of 36,801 citizens, the majority of whom were children and women, and the injury of 83,680 others, while thousands of victims remain under rubble and on the roads.
