Netanyahu is open to the idea of local Palestinians taking over the administration of Gaza, except for the Palestinian Authority
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed on Friday, during a meeting of the mini-security council, his openness to the idea of local Palestinians taking over the administration of the Gaza Strip, but not the Palestinian Authority.
According to the Hebrew website "Ynet", the discussions in the political-security council centered around the issue of "the next day" in the Gaza Strip, and a disagreement emerged between several ministers, led by Itamar Ben Gvir, who demanded a vote so that the Palestinian Authority would not control the Strip. And Defense Minister Yoav Galant.
In this context, Netanyahu said that he was "ready to have a real discussion about local control in Gaza."
For his part, Gallant said, "Military rule in the Gaza Strip means the loss of human lives and the neglect of other sectors."
Gallant explained the reasons for his opposition to the military government, saying: “We will need a huge military operation, and we will sacrifice many lives, and in the end we will leave the region to the Palestinians.”
In turn, war government minister Benny Gantz said: “Civilian control of Gaza has far-reaching economic and political security implications. If we do not advance something at the same time as the other fighting, it will not happen.”
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich responded, saying: "No one will come until we destroy Hamas."
Ministers from the Israeli extreme right launched a sharp attack on Gallant after he called for an announcement that Israel would not control the Gaza Strip after the war and the need to make a “difficult decision.”
This came after Hebrew media reports that Egypt and Qatar rejected an Israeli offer to jointly administer the Gaza Strip with Tel Aviv.
