Biden uses back entrance to White House Correspondents' Dinner to escape protesters
Yesterday evening, Saturday, US President Joe Biden delivered a speech at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner during protests abroad against his support for Israel in its war on the Gaza Strip, using the back entrance to evade the protesters.
Biden avoided the large crowd of protesters at the front entrance of the hotel, and entered through the back entrance, where he was greeted by a smaller number of protesters demanding a ceasefire.
Protesters carrying banners and chanting slogans about the killing of journalists in the Gaza Strip gathered in front of the Washington Hilton Hotel, the venue for the annual ceremony. Hundreds of protesters also urged journalists to boycott the ceremony, and chanted against US administration officials when they arrived at the venue.
The protesters chanted the phrase, "Shame on you," and a number of them spread out on the street in front of the invitees, in reference to the victims of Israel's ongoing war on the Gaza Strip for about 7 months.
The Code Pink movement organized a protest at the concert site, writing on its website, “The American media repeats anti-Palestinian narratives and ignores Israeli war crimes.”
Biden faced a growing movement criticizing his policies as the Israeli war on Gaza continued, including a fundraising event last March in New York, where demonstrators disrupted the event due to American support for Israel.
The scope of this movement's activity has recently expanded to include universities in the United States.
White House Correspondents' Association President Kelly O'Donnell declined to comment on security measures related to the dinner party.
The traditional dinner is organized by the influential White House Correspondents Association, and includes the distribution of prizes and grants to students majoring in journalism. 2,600 invitees participated in the event last year.
It is noteworthy that the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip resulted in the death of 141 journalists and the injury of others, with the occupation targeting journalists and their families.
