Jamaica announces its recognition of the State of Palestine

Jamaica announced recognition of the State of Palestine, through Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson-Smith.

Smith said following deliberations in her country's cabinet: "We continue to advocate for a two-state solution as the only viable option to resolve the long-standing conflict, ensure Israel's security and support the dignity and rights of Palestinians. By recognizing the State of Palestine, Jamaica strengthens its call for a peaceful solution."

She explained that the decision is in line with Jamaica's strong commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, which seeks to generate mutual respect and peaceful coexistence between countries, as well as recognition of the rule of international law and the right of peoples to self-determination.

She continued: We have concerns about the war in Gaza and the worsening humanitarian crisis, in addition to the government’s call for a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, through diplomatic dialogue instead of military actions.

Smith reiterated Jamaica's support for an immediate ceasefire and increased access for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, especially to women and children who suffer daily.

She pointed out that her country supports all efforts aimed at stopping the escalation and establishing lasting peace in the region, and calls on all parties to consider the dire consequences of further conflict, and to commit to diplomatic solutions that guarantee the safety, sovereignty and security of their people.

With Jamaica's recognition, it joins 140 member states of the United Nations that recognize the State of Palestine.
