Pentagon: Construction of a floating port off the coast of Gaza will begin very soon
The United States announced that it will “very soon” begin building a floating port off the coast of Gaza with the aim of facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Strip.
Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said during a press conference on Tuesday that ships loaded with the equipment needed to build this floating port and the naval pier that will serve it have arrived in the Mediterranean.
He stressed that "all the necessary ships are in the Mediterranean region and are ready" to carry out this mission, adding that "we can begin the construction process very soon."
It is noteworthy that US President Joe Biden put forward a project to build a floating port off the coast of Gaza to transport humanitarian aid last March, against the backdrop of the continued Israeli military operation against the Hamas movement in the Strip and in light of a severe shortage of food and other aid in Gaza.
The project includes building a temporary floating seaport that allows large ships, whether military or civilian, to dock there to unload their cargo and transfer it to smaller ships that can deliver this aid to a sea dock connected to the coast.
American officials indicated that the construction of this port will not require the presence of any American soldier on the ground in the Gaza Strip, but American military personnel will be present during their construction of the port, and that Israeli forces will ensure the security of the construction process.
