The Times: Will Biden's support for Israel cost him the White House?

The writer and British legal expert on media and publishing issues, Hugh Tomlinson, says that the war in Gaza is quickly turning into a political nightmare for US President Joe Biden and may cost him his position in the White House, due to his support for Israel in its war on Gaza.

The author pointed out in his article in the British newspaper The Times that thousands of American voters put a "non-committal" mark on their ballots in the primaries within their parties as an expression of their anger at the president's refusal to demand a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Biden is trying to get around

He said that Biden offered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after the attack of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Israel on October 7, unconditional support. And after 5 months, the Biden administration began to find it difficult to convince Netanyahu, which forced it to go around him to speed up the flow of aid to Gaza.

He added that for weeks, White House officials have evaded questions about why American influence on its closest allies in the region has failed to stop the fighting or increase the flow of aid. And Washington still fears that withholding military support from Israel will be politically disastrous.

Tomlinson confirmed that former US President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress will portray Biden's pressure on Israel as a historic betrayal of one of America's closest allies.

And the writer recalled that Trump "who is absolutely sure to be a rival to Biden for the White House next November", routinely claims that the Hamas attack "would never have happened if I were president", and described the attack as a result of Biden's appeasement of America's enemies abroad

Protest vote

At the same time, the writer says that Biden is facing an increasing domestic backlash for his support for Israel. Starting in Michigan last week and continuing until Big Tuesday, he faced a strong protest vote in the Democratic primary. During his visit last February to Michigan, which is one of the main arenas of the battle that will decide the 2024 elections, people chanted "genocide atmosphere".
