UN rapporteur: The Gaza crisis is unprecedented in the world
The UN rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, said that the crisis in the Gaza Strip is unprecedented in the world, calling for Israel to be held accountable for war crimes and genocide.
In statements to Al Jazeera, Fakhri added that there are attempts by governments to introduce aid, but there is no action.
The UN rapporteur indicated that Israel's allies bear responsibility for human rights violations, and pointed out that there is targeting of humanitarian workers and obstruction of aid convoys.
Fakhri expressed his frustration with the international system, and said, "I do not trust the Security Council, as its decisions may not be implemented or face a veto."
Since the start of the war on Gaza on October 7, the United States has used its veto in the Security Council three times against draft ceasefire resolutions.
All of Israel is guilty
Earlier, the British newspaper The Guardian quoted Fakhri as saying that Israel is not only targeting civilians, but is trying to destroy the future of the Palestinian people by harming their children.
He added that Israel is deliberately starving the Palestinians, and must be held accountable for war crimes and genocide, and this means that the entire State of Israel is guilty, not individuals or the current government alone.
A senior United Nations aid official told the UN Security Council on Tuesday that at least 576,000 people in the Gaza Strip, representing a quarter of the population, are one step away from famine.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, leaving about 30,000 martyrs, most of them children and women. Health care has largely collapsed, and many people are living in tents or on the streets.
Most of the 2.2 million residents of the Gaza Strip face the risk of famine, with a number of donor countries, led by the United States, freezing funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and Israel preventing the entry of aid.
A few days ago, the United Nations and relevant international agencies sounded the alarm regarding the famine facing the residents of the Gaza Strip, especially the northern regions.
