Lavrov: We will not agree to any settlement that deals with security of Israel and does not include the establishment of the State of Palestine
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that Russia will not agree to any settlement agreements in the Middle East that affect the security of Israel, and do not include the establishment of the State of Palestine.
Lavrov added in his speech before the Russian Federation Council: “The unresolved problem of the failure to establish a Palestinian state is the only and main factor that fuels extremism throughout the Middle East.”
He pointed out that "there are decisions that are 75 years old and stipulate the establishment of the State of Palestine, the Arab state that no one declared alongside the State of Israel."
He continued: "Judging by the position that the West is adopting now, it is clear that it has no intention of establishing a Palestinian state. The West and the current Israeli leadership do not want to unify the Gaza Strip with the West Bank, as stipulated in the decision to establish the State of Palestine."
He stressed that "Israeli methods against Hamas, which cause civilian suffering, cannot be accepted."
He pointed out that Israel, despite appeals from Russia and a number of countries, continues “the activities of establishing Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.”
Lavrov pointed out that the United States has long refused to work within the framework of the "Quartet" for the settlement in the Middle East - Russia, the United States, the United Nations and the European Union.
Lavrov stressed that the United States wants to "find a solution to its liking" for the Palestinian issue, and to invent something that could be called "later" a Palestinian state.
Shortly after the end of his speech, Lavrov said in press statements:
“Russia is making every effort and its most important priority now is to release our citizens hostage to Hamas and evacuate all Russians who want to leave the Gaza Strip. In parallel, we are making every effort to solve the humanitarian problems represented by delivering medicines and aid to the residents of the Gaza Strip. The third and most urgent priority is a ceasefire, not just a solution.” "Some humanitarian problems, but a ceasefire on a permanent basis can solve the problem that has been pending for 75 years, which is the establishment of a Palestinian state."
Lavrov pointed out that the solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine "is still very, very far away."
He pointed out that, according to UN Security Council resolutions, the Palestinian state must be unified and independent, and must be guided by the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, and live side by side with Israel in peace, security and good neighborliness".
He pointed out that resolving the issue by Washington alone or with some of its close allies in a secret, ambiguous and unclear way for everyone, and without the establishment of a Palestinian state, is not possible at all, as many inappropriate solutions are being proposed.
Lavrov stressed that any American proposal will not last long and will not bring stability and peace neither to the Israelis nor to the Palestinians, because without achieving a just and comprehensive settlement, this will fuel extremism in the Middle East.
Lavrov stressed that the only way to resolve the issue fairly and forever is international negotiations with the participation of permanent members of the Security Council, leaders of Arab and Islamic countries, and the United Nations.
