The office of the captive leader and Fatah Central Committee member, Marwan Barghouti, announced that the Israeli occupation authorities have escalated solitary confinement measures against him inside 'Janot' Prison, located in the Negev desert. Sources clarified that Barghouti, who has been isolated since November 2023, is being constantly transferred between solitary confinement cells in different prisons, a step aimed at increasing pressure on him and preventing his stability.
Informed sources reported that these measures come within the context of a systematic arbitrary policy, where prison administrations deliberately transfer him frequently to ensure his complete isolation from the outside world. These developments coincide with what Israeli Army Radio reported about imposing an additional two-week solitary confinement penalty on Barghouti, reflecting an escalating trend by the Israeli security system towards captive leaders.
On the legal front, Barghouti's lawyer filed an appeal with the Israeli judiciary after being prevented from meeting his client for a long period. However, the prison administration placed additional obstacles by setting next September as the earliest date for a visit. Human rights reports confirm that this prevention falls within a broader policy that includes restricting communication with families and lawyers, and depriving isolated prisoners of medical care and basic needs.
Barghouti has been behind bars since his arrest in April 2002, spending many years in solitary confinement away from other prisoners, and is currently serving five life sentences. These harassments come after the extremist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir stormed his cell last February and issued direct threats to him, raising serious concerns for his life and physical safety.
Field data indicates that targeting Barghouti comes amidst the widespread popularity he enjoys among the Palestinian public, and his symbolic status as one of the most prominent leaders of the national prisoner movement. Human rights organizations consider what he is subjected to as part of a comprehensive retaliatory campaign launched by prison administrations against Palestinian prisoners since last October, through intensifying policies of abuse, collective, and individual isolation.
Israeli authorities are taking systematic arbitrary measures against Barghouti by repeatedly transferring him between solitary confinement sections.
