More than 56 days after the war launched by Israel on the Gaza Strip, and more than a week after the truce, and with the renewal of Israeli military operations, it seems clear the dilemma facing the Israeli army and the multi-dimensional dilemma that can be summarized in two things: the impossibility of achieving the goals that Israel declared for its war, It is summed up by the military and authoritarian elimination of the Hamas movement, the lack of a clear-cut Israeli vision for the day after the war, and the extreme difficulty of ending the fighting victoriously.

In doing so, they express the feeling of the absolute majority of the Israeli public, who felt that what happened on October 7 was a slap that shook everything that this public believed in: that it had an invincible army, the strongest army in the region, that they owned the most important advanced technological industries, and that they were pioneers of innovation. Not only did Hamas fighters succeed on October 7 in achieving the largest military, security, and intelligence breakthrough into the Israeli military system, but they also undermined the self-confidence of the Israelis, who over the past years had dealt with the people of the Gaza Strip with condescension, and arrogance, and believed, regardless of their groups, that they could continue to live their normal lives and enjoy prosperity, while more than two and a quarter million Palestinians live a few kilometers away from them in a large prison, called the Gaza Strip, which has been under siege for more than 16 years.

The war that Netanyahu declared on Hamas is supported by all the Israeli people and stands behind it until the end. As for the goal of recovering detainees, which Netanyahu did not mention in his first declaration of war, but was added later after Benny Gantz joined the war council, it was not a priority in the eyes of the Israeli public in the first week of the war. The absolute majority of Israelis, despite their sympathy for the tragedy of the families of the kidnapped people, and the increasing popular support for their movement, did not want their issue to stand in the way of achieving the primary goal of the war, eliminating Hamas, and throughout the period of extending humanitarian truces and exchanging prisoners, there was a fear among Israeli society that this would lead to a permanent ceasefire that would last forever. The situation is without a military resolution and without victory.

In light of all this, the Israeli army was expected to resume its military operations in the Gaza Strip, as the mission has not been accomplished yet. However, the return to combat today is different than in the past. Today, the Israeli army is again bombing the southern Gaza Strip, under several restrictions imposed by the Americans, who, despite their support for the goal of eliminating Hamas, stipulate that defenseless civilians should not be harmed. This means that the army will be forced to carry out limited and focused operations targeting Hamas leaders who are still in the southern Gaza Strip, where there are also more than a hundred Israeli prisoners. This will be a difficult, complex and thorny process, as how can the destructive Israeli military machine operate against invisible military targets in an area that is the most crowded in the world?

The Israeli army is also resuming its combat operations in light of differences of opinion between the American administration and the Israeli government, which no longer has an open green light and an unspecified time frame. In addition to the disagreements regarding the next day and the Israeli failure to agree to any point raised by the Americans, starting with their rejection of a permanent Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip, which is matched by a categorical Israeli rejection of any possibility of the Palestinian Authority participating in the management of the Gaza Strip, without talking about the two-state vision that does not exist in the eyes of the Israelis.
The current situation is that, despite all official statements that the goal is to eliminate Hamas, it seems that Israel is in the process of redefining this goal more precisely and clearly in light of the lessons of the battle in the northern Gaza Strip. It seems that there is an implicit Israeli conviction that is not being talked about publicly, that eliminating Hamas militarily is not something that can be achieved in the foreseeable future, and another way out must be sought, such as the idea of the exit of Hamas leaders and fighters from the Gaza Strip, as happened to the Palestine Liberation Organization in Beirut after the Israeli invasion of  Lebanon in 1982. This seems impossible, first because “Hamas” is part of the fabric of Gazan society, and a part of it, and is not like the situation of the PLO in Lebanon, not to mention the difficulty of having an Arab country that accepts to receive “Hamas” fighters in the current circumstances of the battle that the movement is waging, and in light of the enormous sacrifices made by the residents of the Gaza Strip, and the war of extermination to which they were subjected.

On the other hand, there is a proposal from Hamas declaring its readiness to release all kidnapped Israelis in exchange for the release of all security prisoners, a complete ceasefire, and the withdrawal of the army from the northern Gaza Strip. For Israel, this is an acknowledgment of its defeat.

The fighting in the southern Gaza Strip will not be easy, and it will most likely not allow Israel to achieve a victory that seems impossible.

Israeli public opinion has turned against both Israel's prime minister and Bezalel Smotrich, his main coalition partner on the extreme right. But they won't give up on their dream of a new Nakba easily

This is a decisive moment in Israel’s war with Hamas. It’s also a hugely dangerous one for both sides. The resumption of a brutal bombing campaign on the south of Gaza was impelled by an overwhelming feeling in the war cabinet, the media, and among the majority of Israelis that the war should go on, that Hamas should be dealt a final blow. The Israeli public wants vengeance, and they still do not feel that they have had it. Faced with the blunt choice of a further exchange of hostages and prisoners and returning to the ground offensive, the war cabinet decisively chose war. If the war cabinet is a long way from recognising what everyone outside Israel is telling them - that Hamas cannot be fully defeated - there is now a growing new realisation in Israel, maybe even within the army and certainly among commentators, that Hamas is far from being beaten. 

The army yearns for redemption for its massive failure to protect its citizens in the south of Israel. It desperately needs the scalps of Hamas’s leaders. But in moving southwards, it’s going into a complete unknown. 

No exit plan

The first part of the ground offensive was limited to an occupation of Gaza City. That part is far from over, but at least during the first phase the army's objectives were more or less clear. It drove the population south to take over the north. 

Now their objective is far from clear. 

It seems that the army doesn’t really know the fate of the remaining hostages. They don’t know how strong Hamas is, and how much it has reinforced its positions during the seven-day truce. They don’t know how long the US will continue to have Israel’s back, bombing an area into which the majority of Gaza’s 2.3m population are now packed. As they push the population towards the border, the likelihood that Egypt opens it to allow aid and supplies in against Israel's will increases. 

So in resuming the war, Israel has no short-term strategy, let alone an exit plan. Domestically the fact that 80 hostages were released safely will lead to mounting pressure by the relatives of the remaining 134 hostages, civilians as well as soldiers. After the truce broke down, and hostages who came back reported that Israel's bombing put their lives in danger, the pressure from the relatives only mounted. The most likely scenario is that Israel lurches between periods of war and pauses in the fighting, without being capable of finishing either. 

Israel's most hated man 

But here Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s problems have only just started. Today he is probably Israel’s most hated man. The trauma of 7 October has added a huge new dimension to Netanyahu’s continuing legal woes, as the first prime minister to be indicted for bribery, fraud and breach of trust while in office, and his failed "legal reform" which sent hundreds of thousands of Israelis to protest against him and his right-wing government.

He is blamed for presiding over the deadliest day in the history of the state. Posters of him with the print of a bloody hand over his face have gone up all over Tel Aviv.Once the fighting is over, the common political wisdom is that these will be his last days in power, and every other political player in Israel is acting on this assumption.

Netanyahu is a good actor, he tries to act as if everything is normal. But politically he is a dead man walking. Why would this particular turkey be voting for early Thanksgiving? He has every personal incentive to keep the war going for as long as he can.

An election poll carried out on the 49th day of the war revealed a collapse in the vote of the extreme right Religious Zionism party of Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister. If an election were held tomorrow, it would fail to win the 3.25 percent minimum needed to enter the Knesset. 

That’s a drop from the 14 seats it won in a joint run with Itamar Ben Gvir's Otzma Yehudit in the elections in November last year. The right-wing alliance which captured 64 seats then would crash to 41 seats out of 120, while the opposition “Change” alliance, if it were to be combined with the Palestinian Hadash-Taal alliance, would climb to 79.

Why? 

The constitutional coup that Netanyuhu's government was trying to mount in depriving the courts of their ultimate power to check the executive has fused in the minds of most Israelis, to a certain extent, with the trauma of the Hamas attack.

The authors of the legal coup are now thought of as responsible for Israel’s damaged unity and, as a result, its damaged security. And this is a sin that cannot be forgiven easily. 

We know now that the Israeli army had only two to four battalions along the fence with Gaza, while 32 battalions were stationed in the West Bank, mainly to protect the settlers. While Ben Gvir is still doing well in the polls, representing the thuggish element of the far right, Smotrich is far more dangerous. He is calculating, a meticulous planner and a real ideologue. But for both of them, and for the entire religious-messianic right, if Netanyahu's government did fall after a potential ceasefire, it would be much more than a simple political defeat. 

Dreams of a new Nakba 

The religious right waited decades for a full-scale war on the Palestinians which would allow Israel to expel numbers comparable to what happened in 1948.They knew they could not fulfil their dreams of full sovereignty from the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea without dealing the Palestinian majority a decisive demographic blow. Yes, a lot of the spirit of Ben Gvir and Smotrich has gone deep into Israeli discourse. Just remember the number of Israeli politicians in Likud who have openly called for another Nakba (Catastrophe), an event which Israel spent decades denying ever took place. But if the war ends without a new Nakba, their dream will remain unfulfilled and they know this. Ben Gvir already said:” No war, no government.”

Or Marwan Barghouti being released from prison. What made the current government so dangerous was the combination of the secular right wing, like Netanyahu, with the extreme ideology of Smotrich. But today, the authors of the failed legal coup  - Simcha Rothman, the head of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee in parliament from Smotrich's party, and Justice Minister Yariv Levin from Netanyahu's Likud party - dare not show their faces, because they are the ones held responsible for dismembering the state. They waited a long time for their moment in history. They are not going to let their life-long dream slip from their grasp that easily. A return to Gantz and talk of a two-state solution? Over their dead bodies, and the bodies of thousands of Palestinians and Israelis. 

This doesn't mean it won't happen in the end, and that the war will go on for ever. It only explains how high are the stakes for Netanyahu and his partners.

And this is why this moment in the war is so dangerous.

A new opinion poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos showed that US President Joe Biden's popularity is close to its lowest levels during his presidency this month, a sign of the challenges ahead for his re-election bid as President of the United States next year.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that his country's move towards recognizing the Palestinian state "continues even if it does not receive sufficient support" within the European Union.

Two citizens were killed and three others were injured by Israeli army during confrontations with the occupation forces that stormed, at dawn on Wednesday, the Al-Far'a camp and the town of Tammoun, south of Tubas.

The spokeswoman added: "It is very dangerous for Israel to promote the idea that it is a Jewish state, and that what it is doing is a Jewish belief. These are Protestant ideas, so it receives support from the West and it is not a coincidence."

The spokeswoman stressed that "there is hate speech that is intended to prevail in Germany, and an attempt to create hatred between Jews and Muslims, and to stigmatize Muslims on charges of anti-Semitism."

The spokeswoman indicated in her statement to “Arabi Post” that “Germany is promoting the idea of suppressing Muslims in order to save the Jews, and I completely reject this rhetoric and say that the Jews live in Arab countries much better than in European countries.”

Restriction on the organization

The restrictions on the organization are not new. During 2019, Joseph Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews, protested against the organization to which Iris belongs winning the German City of Göttingen Peace Prize.

Schuster protested this honor, citing its support for the “anti-Semitic” Boycott Israel (BDS) movement, which caused many of the party’s funders and the city municipality to withdraw from the event, but the committee did not withdraw the award from the organization.

A year before this event, a German bank closed the association’s account for the same reason, according to the association’s activists, what they considered an attack on constitutional rights, a blatant violation and an illegal restriction on their freedom in Germany.

Last month, one of the organization's Jewish activists, Udi Raz, who worked for years as a guide for tourists inside the Jewish Museum in Berlin, was also fired from his job because of his description of Israel as an apartheid state in front of a group of museum visitors.

The German Jewish Organization had previously accused Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid and Defense Minister Benny Gantz of committing war crimes during the recent aggression on Gaza in August 2022.

At that time, the organization filed lawsuits against them against the backdrop of the aggression against Gaza, and demanded in a statement that they be held accountable for the suffering of the Palestinians, and stressed that all war criminals must be held accountable in the same way, including the Israelis.

The BDS movement boycotts Israel

Among the organizations that have been subjected to repression in Germany is the BDS movement, an organization that includes Jews and Muslims that was classified by the German Parliament as anti-Semitic, in a non-binding resolution that was voted on in 2019.

Following this decision, the director of the Jewish Museum in Berlin, Peter Schäfer, was forced to resign from his position; A large and raging smear campaign was launched against him, because he shared, via his Twitter account, a petition signed by 240 Jewish and Israeli academics, opposing the decision of the German legislative establishment against the movement.

A member of the Jewish Voice for Peace in the Middle East, Cher Hefer, previously wrote that Israeli influence in Germany has reached the point of silencing every voice, even if it is Jewish, that supports the global campaign to boycott Israel (BDS).

In a previous article published on the British Middle East Eye website, Hefer said that Jews in the new Germany, who do not show support for Israel, do not enjoy the freedom to express their opinions.

According to the speaker, these Jews are prohibited from giving public speeches or owning museums that represent their culture, or even bank accounts, indicating that only Jews who support the Israeli vision are accepted in this society.

Federation of German Jews

On the other hand, more than 100 famous Jewish figures, including Jewish writers, artists, and academics, signed a letter condemning Germany’s repressive practices regarding the Palestinian issue following the recent war.

The signatories considered that “if this is an attempt to atone for German history, its effect is to risk its repetition,” and they also directed the message to the German government, the federal governments, and the general German public opinion.

The letter also noted that banning Palestinian symbols, such as the Palestinian flag and the keffiyeh, especially in schools or on public streets, are violations of civil rights.

She also recalled that many German cultural institutions yielded to this trend by canceling theatrical performances and intellectual seminars simply because one of their participants defended the rights of Palestinians, which these figures considered a major decline in the spear of expression in the country.

Media repression of Jews

For her part, Jewish human rights activist Iris Heifetz revealed to "Arabi Post" that Jews who oppose the official German discourse in support of Israel "are being boycotted and sanctioned, and no one talks to us or hosts us in the German press."

She adds: "What we have left is social media, so our point of view reaches many people, especially young people, but if you watch German television, you will never know about us."

Iris stressed that "Jews are subjected to more repression in Germany, but not all Jews. Rather, only Jews who stand in solidarity with the Palestinians are repressed, not those who justify Israel's massacres."

Iris explained in her interview with “Arabi Post” that there is “an attempt to target people who have greater influence first, such as journalists whose voice is heard and who have greater influence.”

But she confirmed that today there is targeting and repression, even of all people in the street and any pro-Palestinian voice. Considering that this repression is illegal, Iris says, “We can always go to court and win lawsuits, but that takes a long time and a lot of effort.”

Media alternative

Most Jewish writers and celebrities in Germany turned to social media or non-German international media to express their opinions, after they were suppressed in various forms within the German Republic.

Among them is the German-American writer, Deborah Feldman, who lives in Berlin, and who caused controversy because of an article she published entitled “Germany is a good place to be a Jew, unless you are like me: a Jew who criticizes Israel,” in the British newspaper The Guardian.

“Like most secular Jews in Germany, I have become accustomed to the aggression directed toward us by the powerful, state-backed protectors of ‘official Judaism’ here,” she said in the article.

Well-received theater performances in New York and Tel Aviv have been cancelled, writers and poets have been cancelled, awards have been withdrawn or postponed, and media companies have been pressured to exclude our voices.

The White House is concerned about the impact of images of destruction on young voters and the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Despite this, President Joe Biden is determined to fulfill his promises and grant Israel $14 billion in aid, in addition to his political and military support, but no approval has been made for the proposal. This assistance is yet to come. 

Republicans in the House of Representatives and Congress are setting difficult conditions, some of which have nothing to do with Israel, and now, some of the Democrats are also setting conditions that are directly related to Israel’s policy toward the Palestinians.

The White House believes that Israel is stubborn and reckless, as it rejects everything related to a serious discussion of the next day in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinians, does not care about its intensive bombing of cities in Gaza, and does not respond to warnings of the consequences of a humanitarian catastrophe. The issue here is not "Who is right in this controversy?", but rather "To what extent can Israel pull the rope?", and this is at a time when Israel's dependence on the United States has become much greater than the government is willing to admit.

Two days ago, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made a public speech that included a harsh statement regarding the Israeli government: “When you push a civilian population into the arms of the enemy, you turn a tactical victory into a strategic defeat.” He added: "I have made this clear more than once to Israeli leaders. The Israeli District Court decides to dissolve and ban the Jerusalem Zakat Committee, claiming that it carries out activities that support terrorism.

The Register of Associations, through the Implementation and Control Unit of the Companies Authority of the Israeli Ministry of Justice, submitted a request to issue an order to dissolve the Central Jerusalem Zakat Association to the Central Court in the city of Jerusalem, against the backdrop of its activities supporting terrorism.

The request was submitted in October of this year, and was accepted today by the Jerusalem District Court, which decided to dissolve the association.

This comes after an indictment was filed against the association and its founders, which revealed that the association was founded by Hamas activists and distributed a large portion of its funds to families in need, including the families of Hamas activists and the families of martyrs. The commander of the southern region of the Israeli army, Yaron Finkelman, said: “We are in the heart of Jabalia, and in the heart of Shujaiya, and we will also start tonight in the heart of Khan Yunis,” adding that army members “are working in the terrorist strongholds of the Hamas organization... and are waging intense battles against Hamas "saboteurs" ” .

He pointed out that today was the most ferocious and intense day since the beginning of the ground incursion into the Gaza Strip, “in terms of the number of terrorists killed and the use of fire from the ground and from the air.” He said: "We are determined to continue the attack and deepen the achievement."

On the other hand, the Palestinian resistance factions continue to confront the occupation army’s attempts to penetrate into many areas, where several areas are witnessing fierce clashes, while the “Al-Qassam Brigades” announced: targeting Israeli armored vehicles, including tanks and troop carriers, including in Khan Yunis.

On the 60th day of the war, Israeli army aircraft intend to bomb inhabited homes, destroy residential areas, and commit massacres against civilians, the number of which exceeded more than 1,456 massacres, and claimed the lives of thousands of Palestinians, according to the government media office in Gaza.

The death toll rose to 15,899+ , while the number of injured rose to 42,000 wounded since the start of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, noting that 70% of them were children and women, according to what was announced by the spokesman for the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Ashraf Al-Qudra.

The representative of the World Health Organization in the occupied Palestinian territories, Richard Peppercorn, confirmed that one child is killed on average every 10 minutes in the Gaza Strip, which has been subjected to intense attacks by Israel since October 7.

“I believe we are close to the darkest moment in human history, so we need a permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” Peppercorn said.

In a related context, a World Health Organization official in Gaza said on Tuesday that the situation in the Strip is getting worse every hour as Israel intensifies its bombing of the south around the cities of Khan Yunis and Rafah.

“The situation is getting worse every hour,” Richard Peppercorn, the organization’s representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, told reporters via video link from Gaza, according to Reuters news agency.

He added: “The bombardment is intensifying everywhere, including the southern areas of Khan Yunis and even Rafah.”

Pepperkorn also said that "very little" humanitarian aid is reaching Gaza and that the World Health Organization is deeply concerned about the weakness of the health system in the densely populated enclave as more people move south to escape the bombardment.

He said: “I want to make clear that we are facing a growing humanitarian catastrophe.”

He explained that the World Health Organization implemented an Israeli order to remove supplies from warehouses in Khan Yunis. He added that the organization was informed that the area “will likely become an active combat zone in the coming days.”

“We want to make sure that we are actually able to deliver essential medical supplies,” he said.

Yesterday, Monday, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, appealed to Israel to withdraw the order.

Israel denied that it had requested the warehouses be evacuated.
