The Euro-Mediterranean Monitor calls on Guterres to remove the Human Rights Commissioner from his position
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor described the visit of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to Gaza as nothing more than “a speck of dust in the eyes and aims to cover up Israel’s crimes.”
The Observatory for Human Rights sees the visit of Swiss Volker Türk expected on Tuesday as a cover-up for the crimes of the occupation, and stressed that he must bear his responsibilities, in an official statement published by the Observatory on Monday evening, concluding by calling on the Secretary-General of the United Nations to remove the Commissioner from his position.
At the end of its statement, the Euro-Mediterranean Monitor urged the Secretary-General of the United Nations to seriously consider what the High Commissioner for Human Rights has adopted, and to immediately remove Türk from his position in order to preserve the status and reputation of the international organization.
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor believes in its statement that the scheduled visit of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to the Rafah crossing is nothing more than a speck of dust in the eyes, and aims to cover up the crimes of the occupation, stressing that he must bear his responsibilities stemming from his role and call things by their proper names in accordance with the obligations of his position.
The Center noted that Austrian Commissioner Turk took positions in complicity with the occupation in its war on the Gaza Strip, and did not adopt anything that would provide justice to the Palestinian civilian victims, in light of the genocidal campaign they have been subjected to for a whole month.
The Human Rights Observatory considers that Turk, despite the importance of his position in protecting and defending human rights principles, regardless of any prior motives or positions, appeared to adopt the positions of his country, Austria, which is strongly supportive of the Israeli occupation, and tweets far from the United Nations.
The Observatory explains this by its failure to work seriously to expose the forced displacement that “Israel” has practiced and continues to practice against more than a million Palestinians, by pushing them to leave their areas of residence despite strong condemnations from the United Nations and its officials and agencies, as this constitutes a clear violation of international humanitarian law and may amount to War crime.
The Observatory notes that Turk disavowed the resignation letter sent by the director of the New York office, Craig Mokheiber, and considered it “personal opinions,” after his protest against the handling of the UN bodies, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, with the situation in the Gaza Strip, and his demand that the international organization assume its responsibilities.
At the end of its statement, the Euro-Mediterranean Monitor urged the Secretary-General of the United Nations to seriously consider what the High Commissioner for Human Rights has adopted, and to immediately remove Türk from his position in order to preserve the status and reputation of the international organization.
