Politico: The fate of Netanyahu... and “Gaza solutions”
An American official said, according to a press report, that “the American administration’s expectations suggest that Netanyahu will remain in his position for only a few months, or until the fighting ends.”
In light of the Israeli-American consensus on the goals of the war and the overthrow of Hamas, an American press report stated on Wednesday that the administration of US President Joe Biden believes that Benjamin Netanyahu has only a limited time left in his position as head of the Israeli government.
The American magazine Politico reported, quoting an unnamed American official, that “the American administration believes that Netanyahu has only a limited time left in his position.”
The official stated, "The US administration's expectations suggest that Netanyahu will remain in office for a few months, or only until the fighting ends, despite the unpredictability of Israeli policy."
While White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson denied this and said, “The description that appears in the article is incorrect. The topic was not discussed by President Biden in the past and is not being discussed now. We are focused on dealing with the current crisis.”
On the other hand, a White House official downplayed the importance of these talks about Netanyahu’s future, saying that they were mere speculation, and stressed that the administration’s focus is directly on supporting Israel’s security.
But he explained that Netanyahu's "shaky grip" in power is always "in the background" during the Biden administration's internal talks about the Middle East.
According to the magazine’s sources, American officials are communicating with a member of the Israeli “emergency government,” Benny Gantz, and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. The former American official said that the opposition leader and former prime minister, Yair Lapid, are among other Israeli figures that the Americans are communicating with to discuss the future.
According to the magazine, Netanyahu's political fate was raised in recent White House meetings in which Biden participated, according to two senior officials in the US administration. This included discussions that have taken place since Biden's trip to Israel, where he met with Netanyahu.
The two US administration officials added, "Biden went so far as to share with Netanyahu that he must think about the lessons from the war that he will share with whoever will succeed him in office."
In a related context, an Israeli official told the American “Politico” that “Israel is ready to discuss a humanitarian truce for a few hours,” adding: “The ceasefire is still not on the table.”
The report quoted two US senators as saying that there are ongoing talks to establish a multinational force in Gaza after Israel eliminates the Hamas movement.
The war on Gaza costs Israel 30 billion shekels: every day of fighting costs a billion
The two senators added, "There is early and closed diplomatic movement regarding establishing a peacekeeping force in Gaza, although it is unlikely to include American forces."
One of them said, "There are ongoing talks regarding the possible formation of an international force," while he refused to go into details, saying only that they were "preliminary and very fragile."
“Control of Gaza” after the war; A dispute between Tel Aviv and Washington... and disagreements in the Netanyahu government
In a related context, the Israeli newspaper "Haaretz" pointed out a disagreement between the Israeli government and the American administration regarding the proposal to transfer control of the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority, after the end of the war.
Last Monday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken clearly addressed this proposal and described it as “very logical,” while Netanyahu’s office refuses to deal with the issue, and other elements in the coalition that forms the Israeli government strongly oppose it.
Blinken said during a Senate session on Tuesday that the “most logical” step from the US administration’s point of view is to “hand over” control of the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority, after the end of the war “and the defeat of Hamas’ rule.”
He pointed out that this "requires steps to strengthen the Palestinian Authority and change its methods of work, and that the scenario for bringing authority to Gaza must be gradual: initially only in the civil sphere, and eventually security responsibility as well. He did not specify a time period for the process," according to Haaretz. .
"Increasing the participation of Egypt, Jordan and other Arab countries in managing the sector"
Blinken said: “This is a big question, can we really get them there,” adding, “This needs to be studied, and even if the answer is no, perhaps there are other temporary arrangements that can be advanced, with the help of the participation of other countries in the region.”
According to the newspaper, there is another option that was discussed in Tel Aviv and Washington, which is “increasing the participation of Egypt, Jordan, and other Arab countries in managing the sector, but it is not clear whether these countries are interested in that.”
The Netanyahu government refuses to address this issue, claiming that this is not an appropriate time in conjunction with the continued “fight against Hamas.”
While Netanyahu's office had said about two weeks ago, in response to publications indicating the existence of discussions in Israel on this issue: “Prime Minister Netanyahu has set the goal: eliminating Hamas. All talk about decisions by Israel to hand over the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority or to any other party is a lie.” "; “Despite these categorical denials, senior officials in Israel realize that it will not be possible to completely ignore this issue for a long time,” the report noted.
In the same regard, the report pointed out that the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs had written a document dealing with Israel’s political “exit strategy” the day after the war.
He explained that the document "included an extensive study of the scenario of the Palestinian Authority's return to the Gaza Strip, with the support of an international coalition of Arab countries."
The report stated that discussions were held on this issue in the Israeli security establishment, but “so far no practical decisions have been taken in this regard, and likewise there is no effort on the part of Israel on the international scene to push such a step.”
According to Haaretz, the dispute between Tel Aviv and Washington “in this regard is linked to the growing tension between the two governments regarding the events that took place in the West Bank during the past three weeks,” where Palestinians were martyred and others were injured, some of whom were killed by settlers’ bullets.
She pointed out that Washington had expressed on several occasions its concern about the increasing attacks committed by settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, and called on Israel to take action to eliminate this phenomenon. At the same time, the US administration wants to "see measures that would help stabilize and strengthen the Palestinian Authority, but the extreme right-wing elements in the government, especially Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, oppose this."
The question regarding the possible future role of the Palestinian Authority is expected to raise differences of opinion within the Israeli government itself, according to the newspaper, which pointed out that the two members of the “war cabinet,” Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot, who are former chiefs of staff, had “supported for years in all their positions, Political and security dialogue with the Palestinian Authority. Gantz even met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas when he was Minister of Security.
Smotrich had notified Netanyahu that he had decided to suspend the transfer of clearance funds to the Palestinian Authority, in light of the war on the besieged Gaza Strip, which angered the occupation security services, which warned of an escalation of the security situation in the West Bank.
“Haaretz” said about this, that Smotrich “succeeded in angering the American administration” with this decision, and asked Netanyahu for clarification in this regard, so the Minister of Defense, Yoav Galant, stated on Wednesday evening, regarding this, that “the State of Israel has an interest in stability in Judea and Samaria (the occupied West Bank) has always been, and especially at this time. Therefore, it is appropriate to transfer funds, so that it helps the mechanism of operations and forces of the Palestinian Authority.”
Israeli document from 2016: “Hamas plans to liberate all Palestinian lands until 2022”
This comes as fierce clashes take place between the resistance factions and the occupation army forces in several areas in the Gaza Strip, which resulted in the killing of 16 soldiers and the injury of others since the start of the ground operations until now, while the Israeli death toll, according to the latest announced toll, has reached 1,218 dead since October 7. / October.
Earlier Wednesday, Netanyahu pledged to continue the war against Hamas “until victory,” despite the “painful losses” among the ranks of the occupation army. He said in a television speech hours after the army announced the killing of soldiers during the last 24 hours in battles in Gaza: “We achieved a lot of
