Germany tightens security measures in places where Jews gather

After a similar move by France, Germany decided to strengthen security around synagogues, schools and Jewish monuments. This was recorded after some Palestinian supporters took to the streets of Berlin to celebrate a surprise attack launched by the Palestinian Hamas movement early Saturday against Israel. According to an Israeli army spokesman, the situation in his country is still out of complete control.

As the escalation between the Palestinian Hamas movement and Israel continues, Germany has begun tightening security measures around Jewish synagogues, schools and monuments in the country. This step came hours after celebrations by some Palestinian supporters in the streets of Berlin, expressing their joy at the sudden attack launched by Hamas against Israel.

German Interior Minister Nancy Weiser told Bild newspaper, "In Berlin, police protection was immediately strengthened. The federal government and the regions are closely coordinating their actions."

She added that the German authorities are closely monitoring any "potential Hamas supporters."

Berlin police posted photos on social media showing “people celebrating attacks on Israel by distributing pastries” on Sonnenallee, the main street in the city’s Neukölln district. In some cases, the police checked identities.

The German account of the "Samoun" network for defending Palestinian prisoners published pictures of distributing pastries in the streets of Berlin and a message celebrating "the resistance of the Palestinian people."

Martin Heckel, mayor of the Neuköllen district, denounced “a terrible glorification of a terrible war,” in statements to Welt TV. He called on the government to ban Samidoun's "disgusting terrorist propaganda."

Later Saturday, Berlin's famous Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of a united Germany, was lit up in the colors of the Israeli flag. Chancellor Olaf Schulz wrote on the X platform (formerly Twitter) “in solidarity with Israel,” and the Israeli ambassador responded on the same platform, thanking him for “this beautiful symbol.”

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced on Saturday that his country would strengthen security in places where Jews gather and Jewish schools in France, especially in Paris and its suburbs, after the attack launched by Hamas against Israel.
