White House: Biden meets Israeli Netanyahu on sidelines of UN General Assembly
US President Joe Biden will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced.
Sullivan said in a statement to reporters on Friday that the two men will discuss “the shared democratic values between the United States and Israel and a vision for a more stable, prosperous and integrated region,” and will exchange views on “how to effectively confront and deter Iran.”
Netanyahu had announced earlier this month that he would visit the United States, one of Israel's most prominent allies, without mentioning any meeting with any American officials, which is unusual when Israeli officials visit the country.
Biden has criticized the judicial amendments that the right-wing government headed by Netanyahu is seeking to approve, which opponents describe as a threat to democracy in Israel.
Netanyahu has not received an invitation to visit the White House since his return to power in December at the head of a government that Biden described as “one of the most extremist” in Israel’s history.
In July, the White House announced that Biden and Netanyahu “will meet in the United States later in the year,” without giving further details.
