Washington rules out an "imminent breakthrough" in Saudi Arabia, Israel normalization

Jake Sullivan, US President Joe Biden's national security advisor, said in a press conference that he does not expect a breakthrough at the present time in the talks that the United States is conducting regarding the normalization agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Sullivan said that the issue of the normalization agreement will be only one of the issues that will be raised during the visit of the White House official for Middle East affairs, Brett McGurk, to Saudi Arabia this week and in his planned meetings there with the envoys of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Sullivan indicated that the talks that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken held (in his phone calls on Tuesday) with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not result in an imminent breakthrough regarding a "normalization agreement" between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

In turn, US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel confirmed the visit of Deputy Assistant to the President (Biden) and National Security Council Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk, to Saudi Arabia "to conduct routine consultations on a range of regional and bilateral issues," and that Assistant Secretary of State Barbara Lev Also, the US Special Envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, will be accompanied by McGurk.

Patel said in his daily press briefing that this visit had been scheduled for a long time and that "Brett McGurk will visit Bahrain before the (Bahraini) Crown Prince's visit to Washington next week as well."

The administration of US President Joe Biden focuses in its policy towards the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on expanding normalization between more Arab countries and Israel, as it appointed, last July, the former US ambassador, Dan Shapiro, as an “envoy to the Abraham Accords,” instead of appointing an envoy to the peace negotiations that were interrupted nine years ago. Years.

In turn, the famous New York Times columnist, Thomas Friedman, warned both Washington and Riyadh against granting the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia, arguing that this would push Israel towards the abyss.

Friedman explained that the Israeli government will never be able to be a stable ally of the United States or a partner of Saudi Arabia, at the present time, "because it is an unnatural government."

The article comes amid increased diplomatic activity to reach a security agreement between Riyadh and Washington that includes a normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel in exchange for initiatives for the Palestinians.
