US Democrats Back Pro Palestinian Ilhan Omar Amid Israeli lobby Threat
US Congressman Ilhan Omar, the representative representing the fifth constituency in the state of Minnesota, who is of Somali / Yemeni origin, and the only veiled woman in the US Congress, obtained the endorsement of the Democratic leadership in Congress, before the primaries cycle to face fierce attacks from the Israeli lobby organizations that she wants to defeat her for her pro-Palestinian positions.
In remarks to Politico, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Second Class Minority Leader Catherine Clark and other top Democrats such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Jim Clyburn expressed their support for the progressive lawmaker from Minnesota.
"Omar has been elected by her constituents three times and has consistently defended them, including by serving on the House Budget Committee," Jefferies said in a statement to the newspaper.
"As the leader of the House Democrats, I strongly support her re-election and stand with her as we fight radical Republicans for the future of our nation," he added, referring to Republicans who support Donald Trump and his "Make America Great Again" slogan.
It is noteworthy that Jeffreys and Hoyer were on a visit to Israel organized and funded by the Israeli lobby organization "AIPAC" a few weeks ago, where they expressed their contradictory support for Israel and met with the Israeli Prime Minister, who has been facing a wave of opposition demonstrations since he assumed the premiership last December. On the same day as the report was released, AIPAC posted a video to X, formerly known as Twitter, of Jefferies at the aforementioned AIPAC-sponsored visit, in which the Democratic leader discussed "strict adherence to the special relationship that exists between the two countries." ".
Omar said in a statement that she was "proud to have the respect and support of every member of the House Democratic leadership during my re-election campaign.”
While it is customary for House leaders to support current candidates, Jefferies' announcement is significant given his ties to the pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC.
Earlier this month, Jewish Insider reported that AIPAC was recruiting a slew of candidates to challenge members of the "squad" — a nickname given to the cadre of progressive lawmakers who came into office at the turn of the decade. According to the report, the list of targeted incumbents includes Ilhan Omar, Jamal Bowman, and Rashida Tlaib.
Jeffress has previously supported Bowman and Omar, who regularly infuriate AIPAC with their criticism of Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians.
During last year's congressional primaries, AIPAC's super political action committee, the United Democratic Project (UDP), spent nearly $1 million backing a leading Democratic challenger against Omar.
Despite the support of the democratic leadership for representatives Omar, Tlaib, and Representative Bowman, these progressive representatives face great pressure from the same democratic leadership to moderate their voices in support of the Palestinian cause and the BDS movement, and to demand cutting American aid to Israel because of its racism.
