The Iranian judiciary cancels a death sentence against the background of the protests
The Iranian judiciary has annulled a death sentence issued against a young man in connection with the protests that took place in the Islamic Republic after the death of Mahsa Amini, according to a local news agency reported on Wednesday.
In October, the judiciary ruled the death penalty for Muhammad Qabadlu, 23, on charges of “corruption on earth” in connection with the killing of a police officer who was run over by a car and the wounding of others on the sidelines of protests that erupted in September after the death of Amini after she was arrested by the morality police for non-compliance. Strict dress code.
"The Supreme Court overturned the conviction of ... Qabadlu, and the case will be transferred to another court to deal with the defendant's mental health problems," the Mehr news agency quoted the defense team as saying.
The "Mizan Online" website affiliated with the Iranian judiciary reported in early February that the execution of the death sentence for Qabadlu had been suspended pending investigation into the case of premeditated killing of a policeman. The convict's family asked for his forgiveness at the time, noting that he suffers from bipolar disorder.
The Islamic Republic witnessed a protest movement, starting on September 16, 2022, following the death of Amini after her arrest. It reached its peak in October and November, before it decreased significantly.
Hundreds were killed on the sidelines of the protests, including dozens of members of the security forces, and thousands were arrested in connection with the movements, which Iranian officials considered as "riots" supported by foreign countries.
Since late last year, the Iranian authorities have executed seven people for assaulting members of the security forces on the sidelines of the protests. And human rights organizations confirm that seven others face a similar fate.
