Ilhan Omar announces a boycott of the Israeli president's speech before both houses of Congress

US Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) said on Wednesday that she has no plans to attend Israeli President Isaac Herzog's upcoming joint address to Congress, citing ongoing tensions between the Israeli government and the Palestinians.

Omar said in a tweet to her on Twitter: "It is impossible for me to attend the speech of the joint session of a president whose country imposed a ban on my entry while depriving (MP Rashida Tlaib) of the ability to see her grandmother."

The Somali-origin MP, the only veiled member of the US House of Representatives, indicated that the United States should not invite the head of a government that prevented her and fellow MP Rashida Tlaib of Palestinian origin (Democrat from Michigan) from visiting their country.

Omar said in the tweet, “Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s speech comes on behalf of the most extreme right-wing government in Israel’s history, and at a time when the government is publicly vowing to ‘destroy’ Palestinians’ hopes for statehood – essentially driving a nail into the coffin of peace and a two-state solution.

In her tweet, Omar added recent issues and concerns with the country and its government, noting the attempt of far-right members of the government to push legislation that would restructure the Supreme Court. She also hinted that she recently declined an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to Congress last month because of his government's human rights record.

"The United States can and should use its diplomatic tools to communicate with the Israeli government, but giving the current government the honor of a joint televised speech sends the wrong message at the wrong time," Omar said.

A number of progressive lawmakers are expected to boycott Herzog's speech at the joint congressional session, including Representative Rashida Tlaib.

Herzog, who has been president since 2021, is scheduled to address a joint meeting of Congress on July 19 while he visits Washington to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Israel's founding.
