Palestinian observers believe that the success of the Jeddah summit depends on its ability to dismantle tendencies and tensions in the Arab region
Palestinian observers believe that the chances of success of the 32nd Arab summit, which will be held tomorrow (Friday) in the Saudi city of Jeddah, in dissolving conflicts and ending tensions in the region, will be fraught with dangers.
On the agenda of the Jeddah summit are several thorny files, including cordoning off the military fighting that erupted in Sudan, ending the political and military division in Libya, the presidential vacancy and the grinding socio-economic crisis in Lebanon, in addition to confronting the explosive situation in the Palestinian territories.
It is incumbent upon the two communities to succeed in presenting a new vision for Arab-Arab relations, rebuilding regional and international relations, and discussing the issue of joining more Arab countries to the BRICS group, in the hope of saving the region from successive economic crises.
The last summit at the level of Arab leaders of the League was held in Algeria last November, and it was the first after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 disease.
The summit, which is the second to bring together Arab leaders within 6 months, comes one day before tens of thousands of Israelis organize the annual flag march that passes through the Old City of Jerusalem, which threatens to explode the situation in the Palestinian territories similar to what happened in May 2021.
High hopes and thorny files
Nevertheless, the former Palestinian diplomat for Asia and Africa, Mazen Shamieh, says that the Arab summit is being held at an appropriate time to deal with large files that are on the table, indicating that Saudi Arabia's weight in chairing the Arab summit will give impetus to joint Arab action in the coming period.
Shamieh added to Xinhua that everyone has high hopes for it, expressing optimism about the summit and its outcomes, given that Saudi Arabia, with its size and capabilities, is able to set an agenda and find solutions, especially in the various Arab files.
Shamieh believes that the most important thing is that a number of Arab countries have applied for membership in the BRICS group, in addition to the fact that Arab countries are talking about bilateral agreements for the use of currencies other than the US dollar in intra-trade, especially related to oil.
On the other hand, Shamieh believes that under the current US administration headed by Joe Biden, a number of Arab countries have become convinced that the United States is a capitalist regime "without morals and unfair terms regarding dealings with its partners and allies, and there is unacceptable superiority."
Shamieh believes that the world is in the midst of changes taking place and taking place in order to arrange and build the new international order, in light of the fact that the existing international order is no longer accepted by the countries of the world.
Shamieh believes that countries in the Middle East and the world look favorably on the role that China may play with its stature and capabilities, in addition to being a non-colonial country, and therefore any geopolitical interventions from China in the region will have a positive resonance.
A new vision and future partnerships
For his part, the Palestinian writer and political analyst, Dr. Ibrahim Rubaiya, believes that China follows diplomacy with its calm Confucian rules, and it does not take impulsive steps, but rather cumulative steps based on mutual benefit, and these steps are consistent with the Saudi and Arab position, and therefore this would help the Riyadh summit to dismantle crises and ending tensions in the region.
According to the quartet, the success of the Riyadh summit begins with dismantling the existing crises and the concomitant measures to build confidence and reconciliation at the regional level, and the subsequent transformation of regional relations from conflict and competition to cooperative relations.
He told Xinhua that the basis for the settlement that began between Iran and Saudi Arabia and the restoration of Arab relations with Turkey is a common ground for settling the explosive summit files, especially the Syrian, Sudanese and Palestinian issues.
He adds that the prices paid by the Arab countries individually, and the region in general, are very large since the events of the Arab Spring, which created a crisis in the Arab region, and therefore there is a desire to reproduce relations on the basis of mutual cooperation.
In response to the extent of the repercussions of Saudi Arabia hosting the Arab Summit again after only five years, the Quartet says that Saudi Arabia today is completely different, as it is free from any international pressures and obligations and has become a regional player that diversifies in its alliances, investments, and its regional and international relations.
He adds that Saudi Arabia, under its leadership, is establishing a new form for the region and will work during the Jeddah summit to present a new vision for Arab relations, which would reflect positively on the Arab region and its future partnerships.
Shamieh agrees with what the Quartet went to, pointing out that Saudi Arabia is fully aware that its approach to calming the situation in the region is through the file and the Palestinian issue first, arranging the internal situation, ending the division and restoring national unity.
Shamieh believes that many agree that the progress of the peace process or normalization with Israel will not be without costs, and therefore Saudi Arabia and other countries are able to impose their conditions for new arrangements and cool the situation in the Middle East, but this will not be without resolving the Palestinian issue and supporting it.
He points out that despite the normalization agreements concluded between Israel and some countries, the agreements for the Israelis are of no value in light of the absence of Saudi Arabia at the top of the list of priorities as it is the center of the Islamic world and the largest Gulf country.
Shamieh stresses Saudi Arabia's ability to end the internal division and conclude reconciliation between the Palestinian parties in accepting a settlement based on the Saudi initiative launched by the late Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz in 2002.
Restoration of bridges and Arab reunification
Palestinian writer and political analyst Omar al-Ghoul believes that the Jeddah summit this year will be held in light of the Saudi-Iranian rapprochement, and the decision to return Syria to the Arab League after more than a decade of suspending its membership, in addition to the decline of the American role in the region.
Al-Ghoul believes that the restoration of Saudi-Iranian relations came in the interest of the two countries at the beginning and the joint Arab files related to the conflict, such as the file of Syria, Yemen and others, considering that the completion and sponsorship of the agreement represents a strategic weight for China in the Middle East.
Al-Ghoul told Xinhua that since the announcement of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, mediated by China, the Middle East region has witnessed a trend of reconciliation, which hints at signs of strengthening cooperation, unity and diplomatic independence.
He noted the importance of the honest Chinese role in finding a solution to the Palestinian issue, and that this role be a strong competitor with great weight in support of the Palestinian people's struggle for independence and freedom, which is considered an essential constant in Chinese policy historically.
Al-Ghoul pointed out that the United States has historically lost its popularity in the Arab region and now finds that Arab public opinion is negative towards the various American administrations and the American decision-maker because it has simply become the greatest threat to world peace.
It is believed that the Jeddah Summit will be full of vitality, in light of the insistence of the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, to restore bridges with all Arab countries and to reunite Arabs according to relative standards without any disharmony among the Arab countries.
