The Arab League Council decides to resume Syria's participation and restore its seat in the League
The Council of the League of Arab States decided in its emergency meeting today (Sunday) in Cairo at the ministerial level to resume the participation of delegations of the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States, and all organizations and agencies affiliated with the League, as of today.
In Resolution No. 8914 on Syria issued by its meeting today, the Council reaffirmed the renewal of commitment to preserving Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, stability and territorial integrity, based on the Arab League Charter and its principles.
And he stressed the importance of continuing and intensifying Arab efforts aimed at helping Syria get out of its crisis, based on the desire to end the suffering of the Syrian people that has extended over the past years, and in line with the common Arab interest and the fraternal relations that unite all Arab peoples, including the Syrian people and their interests. The Council welcomed the Arab statements issued by the Jeddah and Amman meetings on Syria, and the keenness to launch an Arab leadership role in the efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis, addressing all the consequences of the humanitarian, security and political crisis on Syria and its people, and addressing the repercussions of this crisis on neighboring countries, the region and the world, especially the burden of asylum and the threat of terrorism.
He also welcomed Syria's willingness to cooperate with the Arab countries to implement the outputs of the relevant Arab statements, and the need to implement the commitments and consensus reached at the Amman meeting, as well as the adoption of the necessary mechanisms to activate the Arab role.
In its statement, the Arab Ministerial Council stressed the need to take practical and effective steps to gradually resolve the crisis, according to the principle of step by step and in line with Security Council Resolution No. 2254, starting with continuing steps that allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to all those in need in Syria, including in accordance with the mechanisms adopted in relevant Security Council resolutions.
And he decided to form a ministerial liaison committee consisting of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt and the Secretary-General to follow up on the implementation of the Amman Declaration, and to continue direct dialogue with the Syrian government to reach a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis that addresses all its consequences according to the methodology (step by step), and in accordance with the Security Council resolution. No. 2254. The committee submits periodic reports to the University Council at the ministerial level.
The Council of the League of Arab States also decided, in its ministerial meeting, to resume the participation of delegations of the government of the Syrian Arab Republic in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States and all its affiliated organizations and agencies, as of today, May 7, 2023.
In the same context, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced earlier today the approval of Arab foreign ministers for Syria's return to its seat in the Arab League.
Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, spokesman for the ministry, told the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo agreed on Syria's return to its seat in the Arab League.
He added that the diplomacy of dialogue and Arab integration endeavors adopted by Iraq had a real effort to return Syria to the Arab League.
Al-Sahhaf renewed Iraq's position on the Syrian issue and the importance of its return to its seat in the Arab League, which contributes to enhancing its security and stability.
It is noteworthy that the Arab foreign ministers had decided on November 12, 2011 to freeze Syria's membership in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States and all its affiliated organizations and agencies, as of November 16 of the same year.
The decision to freeze was issued at the time with the approval of 18 countries, with the objection of Lebanon and Yemen, the abstention of Iraq and the absence of Syria.
The meetings of the extraordinary sessions of the Council of the League of Arab States began earlier today in Cairo at the level of foreign ministers to discuss developments in the situation in Syria, Sudan and Palestine.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, head of the current session of the Council, confirmed in his speech at the opening session that all stages of the Syrian crisis have proven that there is no military solution to it, and that there is no winner or loser in this conflict.
He pointed to Egypt's warnings over the past years and since the beginning of the crisis about the repercussions of the armed conflict in Syria and the attempt at a military settlement, stressing that the only way to a settlement is a political solution with exclusive Syrian ownership without external dictates.
Shoukry affirmed that Syria's accession to the final statement of the Amman meeting is a positive development and an important step in terms of proving good intentions, implementing commitments, and strengthening Arab-Arab cooperation to resolve the Syrian crisis.
After the speech, Shoukry requested, in his capacity as head of the current session of the Council of the League of Arab States, to hold an official closed session to discuss the issues on the agenda for the meetings.
The Council of the League of Arab States, at the level of foreign ministers, will hold three extraordinary and extraordinary sessions today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo, regarding developments in the situation in Sudan and follow-up on the Syrian situation and developments in the Palestinian cause.
