Why Netanyahu is not qualified to assume the post of prime minister
I can't imagine how Netanyahu must feel himself. Perhaps, throughout his political career, he did not face a more fateful test like this. He put himself in an unbearable situation. If he wins the battle over his judicial "reforms" he loses because the public will never support them as evidenced by the hundreds of thousands who have taken to the streets for 15 straight weeks opposing his so-called judicial reforms. And if a compromise was reached, he would still be a loser, because he had shattered the majority of the public's trust in him. And if he fails to achieve his goal, he loses, because his government will surely collapse because judicial reform was the main platform that kept the coalition together.
Netanyahu lost his way. It is believed to be indispensable, and the country cannot live without it. How mistaken and self-conceited he is, because the country would be better off without him. And no matter how his sinister plan to reform the judiciary ends, its shadow will haunt him. Netanyahu's past achievements will be buried under the weight of his devious scheme, unless he musters the courage to face the bitter truth and submit his resignation.
Netanyahu's historic political demise began when he formed the current government, distributing ministerial portfolios like candy. He has succumbed to a messianic sect like National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, whose thirst for Palestinian blood never ceases. He has surrounded himself with these two incompetent lechers, two apostates who believe in the spiritual superiority of the Jews and their divine right to inherit the entirety of the biblical Land of Israel—two charlatans who seek to liquidate the Philistines if only they can.
And to dissuade Ben Gvir — a convicted terrorist — from resigning in the wake of suspending the legislation, Netanyahu has treacherously given him a free private militia to terrorize Israeli Arabs and Palestinians under occupation, to bully and harass secular Israeli Jews. Netanyahu betrayed the vision and values of Israel's founders, sacrificed the nation at the altar of his self-interest and insatiable lust for power, only to escape justice instead of standing tall and taking the blame. He made himself crippled and unfit to rule, even if he was victorious.
Netanyahu tore at the Israeli social fabric causing an ominous division among Israelis. Tensions between secular and orthodox Jews are rising, the gap between left and right is dangerously wide, and the rift between Ashkenazim and Mizrahim is widening. Netanyahu has sparked unprecedented mass protests and talk of unimaginable internal strife, even about the possibility of civil war, is spreading far and wide. The situation has now become an existential threat to Israel and must now be deprived of retaining the traditions of power.
In the short 120 days of his misguided rule, Netanyahu's "judicial reforms" have severely undermined the Israeli economy. The value of the shekel is collapsing and Israel's credit rating has been downgraded. High-tech companies migrate. The cost of living is on the rise. Foreign investment is dwindling. The capital of the Israelis flows to foreign banks. As long as his sinister plots to subvert the judiciary continue, Israel's once-powerful economy will remain in check. No one but Netanyahu is to blame, and he must pay the political price for this.
The defense establishment is being torn apart. Thousands of reservists who are pilots, drone operators, cyber specialists and intelligence officers have threatened to stop volunteer service. For Netanyahu to dismiss the defense minister for daring in the line of duty when the country was facing ominous danger was an appalling folly that no soldier will ever forget. And although Netanyahu reinstated him, admitting his grave mistake, the damage to the army's morale will continue. Netanyahu has betrayed the men and women who are always willing to put their lives on the line to protect Israel, while putting the country on the line to protect himself. He lost their trust and will never get it back. Thus, Netanyahu must admit this fiasco as he is left with no choice but to vacate his position.
Israel's international standing is declining. Netanyahu alienated Israel's loyal European allies and severely damaged relations with the United States - Israel's closest supporter and friend - and damaged newly forged relations with the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco, closing off any opening to normalizing relations with other Arab countries. It also destabilized Israel's relations with Egypt and Jordan and crushed any hope of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His refusal to end the occupation proves to be a frighteningly misguided policy. Thanks to Netanyahu, the conflict will continue to simmer, claiming more Israeli and Palestinian lives, and justifying it falsely in the name of national security. Only by ending the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, which Netanyahu vehemently opposes, will Israel be truly secure. But first Netanyahu must get out of the way.
Israel's enemies are watching the situation with glee. And while Israel collapses, its enemies rejoice and rejoice. They do not need to conquer or wage war; Through attrition and violent resistance, they can exhaust Israel's forces and weaken its deterrence. They are waiting for all of this with joy, and if Netanyahu does not end up burning Israel, they will come from all directions with pleasure and try to finish what they started. Israel must be united to face multiple enemies, but unity will remain elusive as long as Netanyahu is around.
Betrayal of the real reasons behind the creation of the State of Israel was the end result of Netanyahu's ill-fated takeover. The congregation of Jews into a Jewish state was the aphorism, the impetus, was the aspiration of the Jews of the diaspora, regardless of their religious leanings, to reform, conservative, orthodox, or extremist religious teachings. But now his fanatical, extremist and fascist ministers are crushing familiarity, bonds and a sense of belonging. This is the very fabric that has bound together world Jewry for thousands of years. It has alienated millions of Jews for whom Israel offers a home and refuge when needed. His tyrannical design broke their spirit, that of a multitude of Jews who had suffered oppression and tyranny under the rule of terror by tyrants in foreign lands. They dreamed of salvation, redemption and freedom, not to replace the slavery they suffered in faraway lands to live again in asylums dominated by religious fanatics under the rule of someone who would like to be a Jewish tyrant, no less. His attempted coup deserves nothing but contempt. It's time for Netanyahu to look in the mirror and ask himself: Where do I go from here?
There is still a silver lining waiting for Netanyahu. During his illustrious decades-long political career, he accomplished many remarkable feats. He put Israel on the map as a creative powerhouse, grew the Israeli economy as finance minister beyond anyone's expectations, invested heavily in making the Israeli army a formidable military machine, signed gas exploration agreements that turned Israel into an energy exporter, and normalized relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco Under the Abraham Accords and attracting foreign investment in the high-tech sector, making Israel a global technological giant, and expanding relations in Latin American and African countries, this is among many other notable achievements.
Having achieved all that and more, Netanyahu must admit to himself that he cannot preserve his achievements because he has caused unprecedented social unrest while he is subject to three indictments that limit his ability to govern. He is now being dragged along by the lunatics he put into a position of power instead of controlling events and jealously guarding what is best for Israel. Netanyahu must stop pursuing his miserable reforms in the judiciary, and start bridging the deep, troubling divide that pits one segment of his population against another.
How does Netanyahu want history to remember him? As the villain who was willing to burn down the only Jewish sanctuary that Jews had craved for centuries, just to save his own skin? Or as a statesman who erred but rose to the historic occasion to save the only refuge that unites and protects the collective body of the Jewish people?
Netanyahu must face the nation, gather his courage, and address his countrymen. "I admit, I have committed many mistakes and crimes. I make no excuses. But like all human beings, I am not exempt from human weakness. I confess that I am terrified of possible conviction and imprisonment. I was wrong, very wrong in trying to manipulate the laws to clear myself even though I deserved "These charges. I know I must now pay the price. I shall resign my office as Prime Minister, and I beg the nation to forgive me. Allow me to leave office with some dignity, by dropping the charges against me though I am unworthy of it."
This will be the greatest gift to the nation as it just celebrated its 75th anniversary. Netanyahu must help heal Israel and make this one of his best priorities — to rise above the fray and emerge from the political scene as a hero if he can only muster the courage to do so. And if he does what is best for the country in this difficult hour, I know in the bottom of my heart that the nation will forgive him.
