Florida prohibits abortion after six weeks of pregnancy
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed into law a law banning most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, after the White House called the procedure "dangerous and extreme."
"We are proud to support Life and Family in Florida," DeSantis said in a statement.
By law, women are prohibited from having an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, except if the pregnancy poses a threat to the mother's health, or is the result of rape or incest and does not exceed 15 weeks, or if the fetus is not viable.
The White House criticized the move, saying it "contradicts basic freedoms and contradicts the views of the vast majority" of Americans.
"This ban will prevent four million Florida women of childbearing age from obtaining abortion care after six weeks -- before many more women know they are pregnant," said White House spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre.
And the Republican-controlled Florida House of Representatives passed the resolution hours ago, with the approval of 70 deputies and forty opposition.
Florida reduced a year ago from 24 to 15 weeks, the period during which abortions are allowed. The new law will not go into effect until the Supreme Court decides on an appeal filed by the associations against the 15-week limit, on the grounds that the law violates the privacy clause.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who intends to run for the US presidential elections in 2024, reinforces his conservative right-wing orientation.
