Russia's presidency of the Security Council "a slap in the face to the international community"

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba considered on Saturday that Russia's presidency of the UN Security Council during the month of April constitutes a "slap in the face of the international community ."

"The Russian presidency of the UN Security Council constitutes a slap in the face of the international community," Kuleba wrote on Twitter, on the first day of the month in which Russia will assume the rotating presidency of the council, calling on the "current members" of the council to "confront any Russian attempt to abuse this presidency."

Moscow had announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would chair a meeting of the UN Security Council on "effective multilateralism."

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also said that Lavrov will chair a discussion session on the Middle East on April 25.

The United States criticized Russia's move and the permanent seat it occupies on the Security Council.

White House spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre said, "A country that brazenly violates the United Nations Charter and invades its neighbor has no place in the Security Council."

"Unfortunately, Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council, and there is no practical international legal path to change this reality," she added, describing the position of presidency of the Security Council as "very honorary."

At the time, Kuleba described the Russian presidency of the Security Council as a "bad joke".

Russia assumes the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, starting from Saturday, for a period of one month, succeeding Mozambique.
