Navalny dedicates his Oscar contribution to those who oppose dictatorship and war
Famous Russian dissident Alexei Navalny dedicated his "contribution" to the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature won by a film about him, to those who oppose dictatorship and war.
"This is not my movie, I did not win an Oscar, and I am not in a position to dedicate this award to anyone," Navalny said in a message he sent from his prison and published by his team on Twitter on Wednesday.
"But I dedicate all my contribution to this film to the honest and courageous people all over the world who find day after day the strength to confront the monster of dictatorship and its constant companion, war," he added.
Navalny has been in prison for more than two years, following his arrest upon his return to Russia from Germany, where he was treated after he was subjected to a serious poisoning operation in Siberia, which he accuses the Kremlin opposition and the Russian intelligence services of orchestrating.
He was sentenced in March last year to nine years in prison on "fraud" charges that Navalny considers fabricated.
From his cell, Navalny declared his opposition to Russia's military assault on Ukraine, calling on Russians to protest.
Recently, he called on Moscow to respect the 1991 borders that place Crimea within Ukrainian territory, while he was often accused in the past of supporting Russia's annexation of this region in 2014.
The Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Sunday was awarded to "Navalny". This investigative documentary, directed by Canadian Daniel Rohr, depicts the stages of Navalny's political rise, the assassination attempt that he survived and then his imprisonment at a later stage.
Commenting on awarding the film this award, the Kremlin accused Hollywood of "politicizing" cinema.
