A court gives the former Brazilian president five days to hand over jewelry he received as a gift from Saudi Arabia
On Wednesday, a Brazilian court gave former President Jair Bolsonaro five days to hand over jewelry he received as a gift from Saudi Arabia , and ordered a review of all official gifts he received during his term.
The Federal Court of Accounts, which oversees the state treasury, also ordered Bolsonaro to hand over two rifles to the presidential palace, which he received as a gift from the UAE in 2019.
Court President Bruno Dantas said during a public hearing that under Brazilian law, public officials can only keep gifts that are "extremely personal and of low monetary value," giving Bolsonaro "five days to return all the items in this case to ... the Republican Palace, their rightful owner." .
The unanimous ruling by the court is the latest chapter in a case that has grabbed headlines in Brazil since allegations surfaced that Bolsonaro tried to illegally bring millions of dollars' worth of jewelry into the country.
The O Estado de São Paulo newspaper was the first to reveal on March 3 that customs officials seized jewelry worth $3.2 million at Sao Paulo Airport in October 2021, destined for the former first lady, in the bag of the assistant minister of mines and energy at the time. While returning from an official trip to the Middle East.
The official tried to bring the jewelry into the country without declaring it to customs, but this attempt failed. The newspaper indicated that the jewelry (a necklace, ring, watch and earrings) from the Swiss luxury brand "Chopard" was a gift from the Saudi government to Michelle Bolsonaro.
The relevant minister, Bento Albuquerque, told the same newspaper that another group of men's jewelry (watch, cufflinks and a fountain pen of the same brand) was brought into Brazil without being seized, and part of it became in Bolsonaro's possession.
Bolsonaro, who has been living in the United States since the end of December, denied on Saturday that he had done anything "against the law."
