Release on bail of a famous actress in Iran

Tehran - (AFP) - Iranian authorities released on bail Sunday the famous Iranian actress Hengama Qadiani, according to two news agencies, more than a week after she was arrested after she supported the protest movement in the country.

Iran has been witnessing protests since the death of Iranian Kurdish Mahsa Amini, 22, on September 16, after she was arrested by the morality police in Tehran. The authorities consider these demonstrations "riots" incited by Western countries.

The official IRNA news agency reported that Qadiani's release came on Sunday "by order of the judiciary". Tasnim agency stated that the actress was released on bail.

Qadiani was arrested on November 20 after she incited and supported "riots" and contacted opposition media, according to IRNA.

The actress posted on her Instagram account a videotape filmed in a street in Tehran, in which she appears in front of the camera without speaking, and then turns around and ties her hair, similar to women heading to participate in demonstrations.

Qadiani, 52, won the Best Actress Award twice at the Fajr Film Festival in Tehran, in 2008 and 2012.

On Saturday, local media reported the release of the Iranian-Kurdish soccer player, Fawria Ghafouri, who was arrested Thursday on charges of spreading "propaganda" against the authorities. His wife denied via "Instagram" that the player had been released.

The authorities announced the arrest of thousands of people as part of these demonstrations, including personalities in cinema, politics and sports.
