Malaysia ends rescue and search efforts after a landslide that left 31 dead
Kuala Lumpur - (AFP) - The Malaysian authorities announced on Saturday the end of rescue operations and the search for bodies in the rubble of an unauthorized campsite that was destroyed by a landslide on December 16, killing 31 people.
Police say 92 people, including dozens of children, were mostly asleep at the site when tons of mud and earth fell on a hill near the town of Batang Kali on the outskirts of the capital, Kuala Lumpur.
All the victims are Malaysians, including eleven children, and 71 people have been rescued.
"We found the last body, which is of a child," rescue official Havisham Muhammad Nur told AFP.
"We will end search and rescue operations," he added.
About 700 people from various government agencies and emergency services, equipped with sniffer dogs and bulldozers, searched the rubble and muddy ground for survivors and bodies.
Among the many victims were families who had come to relax at the end of the year.
According to the authorities, the camping site was not licensed and its operators will be punished if they are found responsible for the accident.
Landslides are common in Malaysia , where heavy rains usually occur at the end of the year.
No heavy rains have yet been recorded in the area where the disaster occurred.
Four people were killed in another landslide in March caused by heavy rains that flooded their homes on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.
In 1993, a mudslide triggered by heavy rains caused the collapse of a 12-storey apartment building near the capital, killing 48 people in one of Malaysia's worst natural disasters.
