"Meta" fined 265 million euros in favor of the European Union
London - (AFP) - The Irish Data Protection Commission has imposed a fine of 265 million euros on Facebook 's owner Meta Group in favor of the European Union for failing to adequately protect its users' data.
The measure comes within the framework of tightening financial fines and legal measures taken in the European Union and the United States against technology giants such as Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple.
And the Irish Data Protection Commission announced the “completion of an investigation” into “Meta Platforms Ireland Limited”, the subsidiary of “Meta” and “the body that monitors data in the Facebook social network”, noting “a fine of 265 million euros and a series of corrective measures.”
Facebook is supervised by the Irish Data Protection Commission on behalf of the European Union, given that the social media giant's regional headquarters are located in Ireland.
In April 2021, the authority announced the opening of an investigation into Facebook for the benefit of the European Union, after revealing the hacking of data of more than 530 million users in 2019.
The investigation included the applications "+Facebook Search+, +Facebook Messenger Contact Importer+ and +Instagram Contact Importer+ (...) between May 25, 2018 and September 2019".
The investigation sought to find out whether Meta adequately protected the data of its users from the perspective of European General Data Protection Regulations.
The Irish Data Protection Commission stated that the decision to impose a fine on Meta and its subsidiaries was taken on Friday following the investigation, which concluded that there were "violations of European regulations".
