Lebanon accepts the English version of the proposal to demarcate the maritime borders
Beirut - (AFP) - Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced, on Tuesday, Lebanon's approval of the English version of the American offer to demarcate the maritime borders with Israel, provided that President Michel Aoun announces the final position on Wednesday.
After his meeting with the President of the Republic, Mikati said, "There is complete agreement on it in English," noting that Aoun is still reviewing the Arabic translation.
Since the beginning of June, developments related to the file have accelerated after a pause for months due to disputes over the disputed region. After meetings and shuttle contacts between the two parties, the American mediator, Amos Hochstein, made his last offer during the past few days.
On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid announced a "historic" agreement to demarcate the maritime borders with Lebanon.
And the Presidency of the Lebanese Republic considered that the final version of the American offer was "satisfactory to Lebanon (...) and preserved Lebanon's rights to its natural wealth," adding that it "hopes that the agreement on demarcation will be announced as soon as possible."
Aoun is supposed to issue a statement on Wednesday announcing Lebanon's final position.
On Tuesday, according to the Lebanese presidency, Aoun received a call from his US counterpart, Joe Biden, to congratulate him on "the end of negotiations to demarcate the southern maritime borders."
The Lebanese authorities are counting on the existence of oil reserves that will help the country overcome the catastrophic repercussions of the economic collapse that has been dragging on for nearly three years.
Hezbollah, the arch-enemy of Israel, has in recent weeks threatened Israel with military escalation, warning it not to undertake any activity in the Karish field, which Lebanon considered to be located in a disputed area, before reaching an agreement to demarcate the maritime borders.
In the evening, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah will deliver a televised speech in which he is likely to address the agreement.
Under the new agreement, the Karish field will be entirely on the Israeli side, while the agreement will guarantee Lebanon the Qana field, which crosses the demarcation line separating the two parties.
On Tuesday, Mikati met with a delegation from the French company Total, which in 2018, along with two other companies, obtained a license to explore in two out of ten Lebanese blocks.
After his meeting with Aoun, Mikati said, "It was agreed to start the exploration phases immediately after the final agreement."
