5-magnitude earthquake hits Greece

ATHENS (AFP) - A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck central Greece early Sunday, with no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The Athens National Observatory stated that the underwater earthquake occurred at 1:02 local time (22:02 GMT) at a depth of 12.7 km in the Gulf of Corinth, about 100 km west of Athens.

The tremor was felt in the capital as well as in the Peloponnese.

Greece is exposed to earthquakes on a regular basis because it is located on a number of geological fault lines.

Two people died in Samos in October 2020 as a result of a seven-magnitude earthquake in the Aegean Sea, which also killed 114 people in the Turkish coastal city of Izmir.
