Juul announces the settlement of 5,000 lawsuits involving the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors
Washington (AFP) - US e-cigarette maker Juul said Tuesday it had reached a landmark agreement to end more than 5,000 complaints filed by 10,000 people over accusations it targeted teens in its marketing strategy and sales of its products to them.
"Jules Labs has reached agreements with the plaintiffs," the group said in a statement, without giving details.
She pointed out that the financing of this process will be through "money in the form of shares."
The American company pointed out that the solution is "global" and covers complaints against "Jules Labs and its heads and managers" before a court in California.
Some of the lawsuits were brought on charges of bodily harm, while others were filed en masse by consumers, government entities, or indigenous tribes.
"These settlements represent a major step in strengthening Juul Labs' operations and securing the company's path to fulfill its mission of providing adult smokers with a transitional solution to smoke-free (tobacco)-based cigarettes while addressing their use by minors," the company said.
The company is facing a series of lawsuits, and a decision was issued against it by the US health authorities, which in June banned the sale of electronic cigarettes in the country, a decision that was partially lifted by an appeals court in Washington.
And "Jul" recently announced a restructuring plan that includes employee dismissals, which would avoid bankruptcy thanks to capital provided by shareholders.
And the American company stated that “during the past year,” it “reached agreements with 37 states and regions,” stressing that it will continue “talks with other major parties to resolve the remaining disputes.”
The past months have witnessed the announcement of several agreements, one of which was in September with 34 states and territories in the United States, for which compensation amounted to $438.5 million.
