US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court, accusing it of targeting the United States and its ally Israel.

The move comes two days after Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during Netanyahu's visit to Washington, D.C.

Neither the United States nor Israel recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Galant, on November 21, on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Israeli war on Gaza.

“The ICC’s recent actions against Israel and the United States set a dangerous precedent, directly threatening current and former U.S. personnel, including active duty members of the armed forces, with harassment, abuse, and possible arrest,” Trump said in his order.

“The United States will impose significant and tangible consequences on those responsible for ICC abuses, including blocking property and assets, as well as suspending entry into the United States of ICC officials, employees, and agents, as well as their immediate family members, because their entry into our nation would be detrimental to United States interests,” he said.

The new sanctions that the United States may impose on the International Criminal Court over its work are the second of their kind, as Washington imposed sanctions during the first Trump administration in 2020 on then-Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and one of her senior aides over the court’s investigation into alleged war crimes committed by US forces in Afghanistan.

The International Criminal Court has 125 member states, and is a permanent court that can prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and crimes of aggression against the territory of member states or aggression by their nationals.
