Musk Spent Over a Quarter Billion Dollars to Help Elect Trump
New documents show that Elon Musk spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars to help Donald Trump win the presidential election last November, highlighting the influence of one of the world's richest people on this year's White House race.
New disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission late Thursday showed that the billionaire owner of electric carmaker Tesla and aerospace company SpaceX donated $259 million to groups supporting Trump's 2024 campaign.
The massive donations have made Musk one of the largest funders of a presidential campaign in U.S. history, helping him become a powerful political ally of Trump and someone who now plays a key role in shaping the policy of the next Republican administration.
According to Reuters, Musk donated $239 million to America PAC, a super PAC he founded to help mobilize voters to support Trump.
Musk also gave an additional $20 million in late October to RBG PAC, a political action committee that sought to convince voters that Trump would not sign a national abortion ban. The group’s name is a reference to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a liberal icon known for her support of abortion rights.
Musk also owns the social media platform X and is an adviser to Trump’s transition team. Trump has tapped him, along with former Republican presidential candidate and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, to head a task force aimed at cutting government spending and regulations.
Musk and Ramaswamy met on Capitol Hill on Thursday with lawmakers whose support they will need to secure to reach the sweeping spending cuts Trump has demanded of them.
The two men called for firing thousands of federal employees, cutting regulations, and eliminating outdated programs, such as health care for veterans.
