The Lebanese army deploys in the south and the Israelis withdraw from the villages they entered

Tension continues on the southern border of Lebanon with daily Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement, in parallel with internal and external efforts being made to prevent the renewal of the war, and the completion of the Lebanese army's deployment in the south with the beginning of the Israeli army's withdrawal from the villages it entered.

Everyone in Lebanon is counting on calm and the parties’ commitment to the agreement, with the monitoring committee starting its expected work in the coming few days, with the expected arrival of the French general on Wednesday, after the arrival of the American general who will head the committee, to hold its first meeting on Thursday, according to what military sources told Asharq Al-Awsat.

At a time when the Israeli army began to withdraw with its soldiers and vehicles from the villages it entered in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese National News Agency reported on Tuesday that there was a heavy deployment of the army in the neighborhoods and streets of the city of Tyre and its surroundings in the south of the country to maintain security, noting that this comes as “a signal for the beginning of the redeployment of the army in the south, especially in the border villages.”

The Lebanese army also announced on Tuesday its need for volunteer soldiers to join its combat units, as part of a plan to recruit additional elements in the army to enhance its capabilities to deploy in the south and implement Security Council Resolution No. 1701 after the ceasefire agreement.

The ceasefire agreement stipulates a 60-day truce, during which Israeli forces are supposed to withdraw from the villages they entered, while Hezbollah is required to end its armed presence, starting from south of the Litani River, where 10,000 Lebanese army personnel will be deployed, in addition to the United Nations peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL).

While the tension on the border between Hezbollah and Israel decreased on Tuesday after an unprecedented escalation on Monday evening, since the implementation of the agreement began, Israeli violations continued, exceeding 80 violations in 7 days, according to documentation by the Lebanese army.

On Tuesday, the Israeli bombing led to the death of a citizen in the town of Shebaa. The National News Agency said that he was “killed by a missile launched by an enemy drone.”

Al-Watania reported that “an artillery shell fell on the Marjeyoun plain in the Tell Marjeyoun area,” noting that an Israeli Merkava tank penetrated from the Tell Nahas triangle towards the triangle separating Deir Mimas - Burj al-Muluk and Kfar Kila in the south, and stopped at a distance of no less than 200 meters near a Lebanese army checkpoint stationed in the town of Burj al-Muluk.

For its part, Al-Manar TV, affiliated with Hezbollah, reported that a convoy of 15 Israeli vehicles advanced from the Wazzani border area towards the Wata al-Khiam area in southern Lebanon, noting that “part of the Israeli convoy headed towards the eastern neighborhood of the town,” after information had indicated on Monday that Israeli military vehicles had retreated from the Khiam neighborhoods.

A raid was launched on the town of Beit Lif in the Nabatieh Governorate in southern Lebanon, and the Israeli army fired machine gun bursts towards the town of Majdal Zun in the western sector.

In contrast, the Israeli army said: "It attacked a terrorist cell in the Aqaba area in the Bekaa."

Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz threatened on Monday to penetrate "deeper" into Lebanon, and not distinguish between it and Hezbollah, if the fragile ceasefire between the Hebrew state and the Iranian-backed party collapses.

"If the ceasefire collapses, there will be no immunity for the state of Lebanon," Katz said during an inspection visit to the northern border, adding: "If we resume the war, we will move with greater force, and we will penetrate deeper" into Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Al-Watania reported that the civil defense and ambulance teams of the Islamic Health Authority have begun “returning the bodies of the martyrs (who fell during the war) to their final resting place.” The head of the Tyre District Medical Department, Dr. Wissam Ghazal, revealed that “their number is 192 martyrs, and the Ministry of Public Health, Civil Defense, the Tyre District Municipalities Union, the Tyre Municipality, and the Natural Disasters Unit of the Municipalities Union are working to help complete these humanitarian operations.”
