Netanyahu visits Jordan border, vows to build 'strong wall'
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the border with Jordan on Wednesday and pledged to work on building a "strong wall to prevent smuggling in coordination with neighbors," days after a Jordanian killed two Israelis at the Allenby Bridge (King Hussein Bridge as it is called in Jordan and Karameh Crossing as it is called on the Palestinian side).
Netanyahu spoke in a video broadcast by his official account on the "X" platform during his inspection of the borders with leaders in the Israeli army about attempts to smuggle fighters and weapons from Jordan to the West Bank and Israel.
He said that Israel is in the midst of a multi-front conflict in which it needs to secure its eastern border with Jordan.
"We will work here to establish a strong wall against smuggling attempts, and we will do this in coordination with the neighbors. It is important for us to ensure that these borders remain borders of peace and security," he added.
The wall he talked about is a revival of a project that was previously proposed about 20 years ago.
Netanyahu's visit comes after the operation carried out by Jordanian Maher Al-Jazi last Sunday, in which three Israelis working as employees at the Allenby crossing were killed.
The Israeli Prime Minister described what happened at the crossing as a difficult day for Israel.
After the operation, Israel took measures that included closing all border crossings with Jordan, before reopening the Allenby crossing while keeping it closed to cargo traffic.
